If you're ok with dated graphics I can always recommend Darksun: Shattered Lands. Post apocalyptic fantasy setting. Plays sort of like Fallout. Create a party of up to 4 players (no recruitable NPC's, but there are allies). You start off fighting lots of monsters in the arena. If you do well the crowd throws bits of cash. If you do really well the monsters get bigger and badder and you get even more cash. After escaping you journey through the desert uniting towns, armies, and former slaves to fight the oncoming Draj army. The order and number of allies you get is up to you. Typically the end game can be triggered after uniting 2 or 3 towns. But the more you get the easier the final battle is. A sequel, Wake of the Ravager, was made but it's a shadow of the original.

I got another one. It's more FPS than RPG, but that's debatable. Deus Ex. Play it with the Shifter mod. There's so many changes to the weapons, skills, new augmentations like the skullgun, new weapons, changed point system so the stealth approach is more rewarding, and other stuff. New alt-fire keybind. One thing I liked is being able to stack multiple combat knives and throw them. Oh yeah, when you throw crates and heavy things at guys it hurts and sometimes kills. Good stuff. Check it:

I have Jade Empire downloaded from steam but I haven't played it yet. I will keep you guys UPDATED.
Anyways, if you like DnD a lot then ToEE with all the patches and fan made patches will probably be good. Supposedly Gothic 1 and 2 are good but 3 is a buggy mess.
I've been meaning to play Prelude to Darkness for a longtime. It's an independent RPG but a lot of people on the codex highly recommend it. It's also now free to download. http://www.zero-sum.com/

I played Jade Empire a bit back in the day and found it utterly unjoyable. Combat gets boring after about twenty minutes when you realize that no matter how much you upgrade shit it's the same thing. You do more damage, but oh noes, enemy has more hit points. You move faster, but oh noes, enemy dodges faster. You turn into giant mutant zombie dragon, but oh noes, enemy already is one.

As I've said a million times, Arcanum would've been better served as a book. Story was cool, gameplay was not.

thanks for the recommendations hombres, i will explore and examine
i tried this a while ago when it was earlier recommended here, but i couldnt get into it. i dont really consider graphics a huge deal, but it looks so bad i couldnt get over it. bad 2d is one thing, but bad 3d is entirely another, and bad 3d it certainly is. maybe ill try it again and give it more time, i dont know. i really liked the back story that i readPOOPERSCOOPER wrote:I've been meaning to play Prelude to Darkness for a longtime. What the fuck was wrong with the gameplay?
If any of your arguments contains the word 'balance', don't even answer that question.
