Sound advice wanted

Post by Tingel Tangel »

So, I've quit smoking. Cold turkey, I'm on my fourth day without a cig. I keep chewing gum and crunching hard candy instead and fumble around with pens alot, to keep my fingers busy. Does anyone have any good ideas about what to do whenever the urge to buy a pack strikes?

I've read somewhere (can't remember if it was here or some other forum) that the actual physical addiction ceases after three days, and after that it's purely mental, which should be overcome within a month - I have no idea if this is BS or has a bit of truth in it. Anyway, still, advice? Experiences? Bed-time stories? Anything?

I'm actually sort of staying away from computer games for a couple of days, since my most massive intake of cigs were usually when playing...

think of the light at the end of the tunnel: the expenses and inconveniences you're escaping.
remind yourself that you didn't need cigarettes before you started smoking, and you don't really need them now either.

Technically what was said is true. After the first week (I dunno if its 3 days, but it's pretty close) it's all mental. One tip I always heard was to avoid places or situations where you used to smoke for abit or do a physical activity afterwards, like a walk or something, if it can't be avoided. So like say if you smoked after dinner, go for a walk instead. If you generally smoked while using the computer, take a break if you can help it.

Physical activity, of which sex counts, helps.

^ What he said, and keep a bottle of water nearby with one of those sports-lids. Whenever you feel like a cigarette, have a sip of water.

Works surprisingly well.

I recently quit and then started again.

I blame it on the computer.

Something to do during load times/etc.

:drunk:

I also ended up drinking more beer.

Substituting a beer for every cigarette turned out to not work.

After many beers I wanted a smoke...

I should really be in school now and this has helped me keep my mind off it for the last 15 minutes.

What gimp said for the win. Heroin... it will, indiscriminately, keep your mind off of everything... besides the White Lady herself, of course.

Go get your fix.
There are no 'knowns'. There are thing we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know. So when we do the best we can and we pull all this information together, and we then say well that's basically what we see as the situation, that is really only the known knowns and the known unknowns. And each year, we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns.

Addictive personalities tend to get another addiction as a replacement for the one they just got rid of. And most people are "addictive personalities", it's hard-coded, lulz D: So just make sure you won't get gonorrhea or AIDS and that you won't get fat, because of the increase in appetite. Find a "safe" addiction.

Like murder. As long as you don't know your victims and you don't leave semen at the crime scene it's a pretty safe bet. Or so I've heard :eyebrow:
