id Software - teh new engine

Carmack introduced the technology, saying, "So the last couple of years at id we've been working in secrecy on next-gen tech and a game for it ... this is the first time we're showing anything we've done on it publicly." He describes the demo happening on screen: "What we've got here is the entire world with unique textures, 20GB of textures covering this track. They can go in and look at the world and, say, change the color of the mountaintop, or carve their name into the rock. They can change as much as they want on surfaces with no impact on the game."
Carmack finished off the tease saying, "We're going to be showing on a Mac, PC, PS3, and Xbox at E3, we'll have another Mac announcement at E3." Wow, talk about multiplatform. Check out some pics of the id Tech 5 demo from Engadget after the break.

Why is it that the word 'next gen' makes me want to spontaneously vomit? Is this normal?

yes, that's normal
I like how id stays true to their multi-platform stuff though, extra kudos for that

I respect the companies that release their games on both Mac and PC simultaneously

Platinum-plated shit is still shit.
Making shitty action games photorealistic isn't going to make them better. I hope some of these devs figure this out before we're all knee-deep in "next-gen" 3D engines that can't support dialogue options with more than 3 words.

"next-gen tech and a game for it"
I actually like that he admits they're just into making the engines, that the game is secondary. It seems to be what they do best, but at the same time, that philosophy has lead to some really decent games. I enjoyed doom 3, for all its shortcomings, it was still actually fun for me to play.

There is a lot of steampunk about those screens. I like it. The engine looks good, of course...

My sentiments exactly. It does, indeed, remind us of how it is time to get a
next-gen comp. to play those next-gen games.
Sooner or later, every gamer of the
old-gen. realizes that just playing Starcraft and Fallout/Arcanum, etc is not enough.

I can live without seeing the myriads of details that choke a super-computer anyway, if they improved the storyline..

I don't agree, the fact they seem to have gotten in-game atmospheric perspective down is pretty interesting.
I'm not a fan of the face but meh, it's got far to go?

i don`t upgrade it. i`m buying a new one and after that again a new one, i am rich, i have money, fuck that. actually i am not, but i refuse to go for a console. Its a stupid situation anyway, Windows Vista sucks and if you want to play good games you need to go for Xbox360, Windows owns now the westside and eastside, nowhere to hide for a nigga.
