Postapocalyptic shooter Rage with id Software`s new engine
[ Game -> Article ] - More info on Person: John Carmack | More info on Company: id Software | More info on Game: Rage

On this years Quakecon 2007 id Software has announced a new postapocalyptic shooter called Rage. With this title id Software is making use of its new game engine called Tech 5. Rage is not only a shooter, but also will offer some racing elements and action adventure elements. The release date of Rage is still unknown. John Carmack stated, he won`t make use of the Direct 10 technology. Rage is planned to be released on Xbox360, Playstation 3, PC and MAC.

Some quotes from the gamespot article:

Speaking to a small collection of game journalists, Hollenshead
explained that Rage was a deliberate departure from the corridor
shooters that made id famous. Its gameplay will be "60 percent shooting
and 40 percent driving" between villages in a postapocalyptic wasteland

According to Rage lead designer Tim Willits, the game's title has a
threefold meaning. "You're fighting against a post-apocalyptic
goverment, so you're raging against the machine," he said. "Then
there's driving combat, so there's road rage." Willits also said that
"you can't spell garage without 'rage,'" and then revealed the game
will have shops where players can extensively customize their vehicles.

Rage will have open-world elements, allowing players to exit their
vehicles and explore caves and other parts of the landscape. The game
will feature a single-player campaign that will clock in around 20
hours, but will allow individual missions to be played in co-op mode.
No other multiplayer details were announced.

The website gametrailers.com has uploaded some videos about the Tech 5 Engine and the game, which can be found here.

Spotted @ Gamespot

None of their games are bad, just generic with a high amount of polish. I enjoyed Doom 3, but didn't have the patience to complete its expansion. It was a slower and darker version of Quake 2. Haven't tried any of the knockoffs like Quake 4 or if I really want to stretch it, Prey.
Rage actually looks and sounds fresh. A first person shooter with emphasis on driving and buying parts for your car in a vast wasteland sounds fun to me. We know it won't be a buggy mess like every other "next gen" fps because Carmack is an alien cyborg brought to this earth only to code super efficient game engines.

I might buy this.
Average game aside, Id rather get a solid and reletivley bug free game than an over hyped crapfest.
Interplay/14deg East ST academy games anyone ? Decent on their own, but best heavily modded for optimal game play ? (tho that series isnt really a crapfest, I actualy reinstalled the origonal the other day)
That said, if it truly avoids the 'corridor' type of shooter that's standard these days (hell, for most of the history of the genre) Ill be intersted, simply because of the post appoc aspect if nothing else.
That said, anyone wish someone would make a Fallout SPINOFF that actualy stayed true to the canon and story line, while at the same time making it a quality and worth playing shooter (and no, I dont mean FO3, as it claims to be a RPG while at the same appering to be so watterd down the the best aspects of both genre's are watterd down)

I'd play a Fallout Shooter if they kept it to the cannon. Hell, I might try just about any Fallout game in any genre as long as they kept to what was already established. The way I look at it, if they make a good shooter and someone who to that point had only played shooters got interested in the originals because of it, we'd have a new fan and help increase the possibility of a good RPG being made. It also could fall flat on it's ass and even if it was an awesome shooter they'd still feel the right to rape the franchise. Is there really anything short of violent persuasion that would keep the game pure?
The AK-47. When you absolutely positively got to kill every mother#$^#&* in the room...... Accept no substitute.

No, 2008 is already reserved for the MMORPG aftermath.
can`t think how this shit can appeal casual gamers. i hope they all utterly fail.
