Social gaming..

Diablo 1/2, WarCraft III custom maps and WoW is what we've been playing mostly lately.
Diablo 2 has been the most fun though, since it's about your group only, and not very demanding like an MMO.
I'm talking about what kind of games friends can play without having a nuclear reactor backing up your computer, and without commitments that most wont submit to, especially to LAN's.
First I'd like to know what kind of old games.
Of FPS' there is only Unreal Tournament, and the last version where we mostly played bombing run. Fragging and gibbing eachother to bits has never been popular with us, so team effort is key.
I saw Thor talk about some of the ship games, anno 16-1900's whatever.
Is that playable for a good few hours of fun in multiplayer?
Any grinding games(ala D2)?
Then there's the new games, which are comming soonish.
I'm pretty sure Hellgate London will be the next "big thing", or at least between us. Simple braindead coop action with items and character progression = WIN
Any other?

Diablo 1 is pretty fun indeed, Diablo 2 is alright, but not that good imo.
GTA is pretty dope, I think, go for 1 or 2, there are MP patches for the other ones, too, I heard? But 1 and 2 are probably better, anyway. Also, they are free to download from the Rockstar games website. Now that I think of it, I can't remember of a MP mode for 2, there should be a patch hopefully.
Starcraft matches vs the computer are decent as well, thing is, one should have played the campaign first, at least, otherwise it's probably not that much fun for "noobs".
Maybe also C&C series, RA2 for example.
I never played the Anno series online, it's about building your city/civilization, occasional trading and killing other players for the most part. Maybe 1701 is good for multiplayer, but I didn't play it much, yet. :o
How about console games like fighters or Mario Kart?

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
i am a little bit addicted, but its probably the first kind of stage, before it gets boring or not, who knows. It offers you different tactiX, sometimes i feel like i got choices and consequences, like do i go for Mortar and try my luck skill or do i go fo Engineer and try to blow some shit up or being da mean neigbour hood snipa. Playing on se internet is kinda "missing file, pleas download" -shit, but i guess on LAN its way more fun. And the mission design is epic, you can shoot da big fat
Dora cannon by se germanz, and they go liek "WUNDERBAR!" , "SEHR GUT!" , i love this shit.

I used to like ET, too. But the internet is fagged up with mortar and artillery abuse

ya sometimes your team is a bitch, when they don`t go for se Objective. You should hit se filter without big weapons or something, i don`t know if its without mortar then, but i think so, or go for ET Pro, were all se pub fags disconnect real fast and only the true playaz stay. I never had a "Goldrush" game, where se americans won, a little bit imba sometimes, but the combat heat is unbeatable, kinda like battlefield but more closer to the enemy. For LAN most of these things can`t happen, requirement that the players have a intelligence level (Fallout speak: Intelligence 6-7)

It's about sailing around in a ship, right? fighting against them on the sea, invading towns/ports/cities on the coast and stuff.
I'll try to find out.

Got a PS2 only. The "problem" about this kind of gaming is, that it's competitive. My guys are pussies and whineheads, or simply not interested in going head to head. That's why I'm looking for coop games mainly.
We have our occasional 2 hour deathmatches in anything from ye olde quake to UT2k4(or 3?), blasting eachother away, but it gets old very quick.

I'd suggest not trying to "go pro" in ET, the entire scene is full of cheaters, you'll probably be wasting your time. The anti-cheat systems for ET are really poor.
However, Quake Wars seems interesting, anyone tried it?

What are you talking about, Frater?
I have rarely seen cheaters, i.e. players with Sten and 80%acc or something, and they have been kicked quickly in most cases.

Of course, the retards always get kicked. However, in ET it is extremely difficult to tell whether someone is cheating or not, and a clever cheater will go undetected forever. Currently in the ET community, "pro level" cheaters are being discovered on almost a weekly basis now, people who have been cheating at high levels for years.
Just because 1 gets detected and kicked, doesn't mean that others don't cheat. I played high level Counterstrike for quite a few years, and trust me, it's extremely difficult to tell whether someone is hacking or not.
edit: actually, a few months ago, this one guy managed to get the admin password to one of the main cheat providers' websites. This was a cheat for which you had to pay, it sent information from your client to the website, the website verified whether you had paid or not and then activated the cheat for you. This guy unextracted information about people who had been paying for that cheat for month, and a LOT of people from top ET teams were found out to have cheated during official matches, etc.
edit2: It was a guy called "Fusen" from crossfire.nu , he got the password to netcoders hack community. This is what netcoders replied with lol:

Gaming isn't meant to have a social application, so stop with this swell guy.

qfe
Also, Frater, I don't care much about progaming apart from my occasional Starcraft replay watching, thanks for the info nonetheless. The thing that bothers me is when I get killed repeatedly and can't do much about it and I don't care that much if it's the other player's skill or just cheat.
What I find more annoying is kiddies that can't play for jackshit and complain when one "pwns their n00b asses" and keep on whining that one's cheating, even more horrible when those jackasses then get you kicked for that jeez louise. :feelings nerdline:
Anyway, I'm content with my 40something mp/thompson accuracy and uberpwnage kill ratio on most servers, so it's probably all good
:e-penis:

You could try SWAT 4. The expansion set lets you have 2 teams of swat guys who can help solve the same objectives and stuff. I think the game would make a great time for LAN but i've never played a LAN game with it, I've only played internet games awhile back.

Fuck that shit and fuck Jim Layhee.
wc3 tower defense is pretty good, but d2 is only good for like a week then you realize that no matter what you do, there you are. Again.

If I wanted to thank every suggestion in the thread, this would be double as long.. But this one is for you poop,
thanks.
I think a team-based strategy shooter might be a great idea.
I haven't tried SWAT4 before.
There was something like it I tried once, where we snuck onto some plane with terrorists. So I sneak up on this arab with an AK, and half a second after I step into view, he instantly turns around and kills me with one shot. After that I had to wait for 20 minutes for the others to get done.
That sucked.

Unlike most I haven't tried all classes past level 40. Paladin, sorceress, assassin and druid to above 80 so far. The others, all below.
