No, super mutants can't use anything but Big Guns and the Gatling Laser. There aren't graphics for them with other weapons, so they can't use them.

It's due to their 'ham-fisted' anatomy. Their hands are simply too large to operate small weaponry.

No, the Pancor Jackhammer and all other shotguns are Small Guns.
The Big Guns in the game are:
- Avenger Minigun
- Vindicator Minigun
- Gauss Minigun
- M249 SAW
- M60
- M2 Browning
- Bren Gun
- Lewis Gun (MP only)
- Rocket Launcher
- Flamer
Basically, SMs can only use ranged weapons that use the "Heavy" or "Minigun" weapon sprite. Any weapon that looks like a rifle, pistol, or SMG when held by a character is disallowed.

I always thought the flamer was a small gun. It has a rifle graphic so I don't think muties can use it. I would say the gauss minigun could be used by them as well.

No, the Flamer is a Big Gun that uses the Heavy sprite. There is a Mutie w/a Flamer in the underground portion of Osceolla, as a matter of fact. (I always sneak my grenadier past him whilst prone and toss a couple of grenades back there. He doesn't like that...)

Oh damn my senility!
Ok, I updated the list. That's all of them now...I...er...think.

Just had a look at the game again and the Flamer is a big gun. Sorry, my bad .
Sorry, but you have missed one again OTB. The Gatling laser.

This is quickly turning into a comedy of errors...

The Gatling Laser uses the Minigun sprite, but it's an energy weapon, so I didn't include it.
Having the Laser and Plasma Rifles use the Rifle sprite really hurt the SMs pretty badly in the weapon selection department. Of course, it helped out the Ghouls, but if one were to make a true FO/FO2 mod, one should switch those weapons to the Heavy type to let the SMs use them, just like in the RPGs.

I just re-read the post with the list and noticed the title being Big gun list. My bad again. Will I ever be right again? Probably only when a paper dog sucessfully chases an asbestos cat through hell.

That's foolish. They could use plasma and laser rifles in FO1 & 2. Would changing the ingame sprite fix it?

OTB, you forgot the Bren Gun.
And is the Bren gun any good against robots? Cuz it has the same stats as the M249, but it uses .30cal. So is its penetration anybetter or something?

Well, I suppose you could try and change the sprite to a heavy weapon for those and a super mutant would be able to use them, in theory.
Then again, I have a feeling they may have been able to use anything that had that sprite in FO1 & 2.

Wasnt the Bren-gun considered a small-gun? Not sure.

Yeah, how the hell to they fit their fingers into the brass/spiked knuckles?

The brass knuckles are:
majj-ick-ull.
End of story.

I seriously doubt that  also, the iron pipe, how long is it really? If it is the length that a human could use it one handed then a mutant would have difficulty getting any of the pipe to actually collide with something.

Maybe it just increases the weight of a mutant's bare fist so when he hits he does so with more power.

Yes, all you have to do is to change the "Weapon Type" field to "Heavy" and it will look more like the Laser Rifle in the RPG in-game. However, you will keep Ghouls from using these weapons if you do this, although this limitation probably doesn't apply when they are wearing EA or PA.
Archvile wrote:OTB, you forgot the Bren Gun.
And the Lewis Gun, too! (Although it's only available in MP.) Thanks, it's fixed now.

No, it's no better than the SAW against 'bots. The .303 in the core campaign is all set to the "None" subtype, so all you have is average Damage Mod and Penetration. I'm really at a loss as to why this weapon is in the game. By the time you get it it's obsolete in the worst way and it's not like there's an overabundance of .303 in the game that you might want to chew up when you go to Cold Water (assuming that you didn't go there prior to Great Bend). Perhaps it's in the game for WWII-style MP play?
