Playstyle Challenges

It seems to me the game could be a lot more interesting if played through with 'challenges'; intentionally handicapping your character in order to force new solutions to the game's problems.
There are a few obvious ones I've come up with, such as having one stat really, really low (a Stupid Game or an Ugly Game, for instance) or playing through addicted to Jet.
Anyone else got some ideas? I'm sure I'm not the first to have come up with this.

How about only low-tech weapons? Or only pipe rifle? Maybe a carry weight of 25.
While you're getting addicted to Jet, try getting addicted to everything. Psycho, Buffouts, Mentats, RadAway, etc.

A game with only low-tech weapons might as well be a 'Pacifist' game (which does work) because low-tech weapons cease to work very quickly (remember, we're not trying to engineer failure or make the game frustrating here).
The beauty of Jet is the permanent addiction. All the other chem addictions eventually time out, but not Jet. Better to use Jet than to use them all. That's just charlatanism.

What do you mean, being addicted to drugs? Damn fun if you keep your stash up.... have a bunch in each stat. Yay. Unless you mean putting yourself in withdrawal, but that is pretty hard to keep up.

You could try playing as Mad Max. Use only the shotgun and the leather armor. The only NPC you can have is Dogmeat, if you're lucky enough to get him.

That would be cool... Though you need a high Perception, high Luck and a high Small Guns - skill to do
any harm to the bigger baddies.

I handicap myself by always trashing every single town, then dumping all my gear in the middle of the wasteland and trying to win from there. No NPCs, no stores, no raiders, no nothing. Cause they're all dead.

Mad Max style? Wouldn't you need to have Jinxed and only carry around 2 shotgun shells at a time?

Sounds like my kind of game already...

lol, sounds fun. But the fight against horrigan would be hell. I mean how would you kill him?. Well if you ask me, you'd have to get a really lucky critical

Well, Mad Max is a movie, and in movies the hero usually gets a really lucky shot or something, so maybe... Than again, since it is Mad Max, you would probably just get some huge weird looking truck and run Horrigan over.

Well, with maximum perks, traits, AG and a truckload of chems, you'd have maybe 4, 5 attacks with that shottie per round. But that wouldn't even dent him.
You'd need to play a diplomatic/stealth/science character to win as Mad Max, and then you just wouldn't be Mad Max.

Yeah... Well, Mad Max didn't have to kill Power Armor dudes in the movies, so I guess that explains it all

I'm fairly certain with 10 luck and Sniper perk you can take on Horrigan with any ranged weapon.
That and Mad Max often had people fighting with him, though no-one apart from the dog following him, thus it would work out if he convinced the Enclave troopers (and turrets) to fight against Frank.

But Max wasn't much of a speaker... Good in bartering, yes, but quiet otherwise. Plus, he wasn't a science guy. So there goes the turret-plan.
I guess his stats would've been something like this (I've only seen MM2 and MM3, still looking for episode 1!!):
STR 7 very good
PER 9 excellent
END 8 great
CHR 5 average (well forgive meeee for not fancing mel gibson  )
INT 6 good
AGI 5 average
LCK 10 heroic
Small Guns 250%, Steal 95%, Barter 145%

I dunno why people bother with barter (and gambling, though at least with gambling you can make infinite amounts of money)... You've got plenty of money in the game not to have to bother with barter... And anyway most of the better stuff you won't buy (or at worst you can steal your money back
).
Here's my skill investements, this character is currently in Navaro looking for the FOB:
Note: ignore the kills, I was just too lazy to cut them from the text file.
Code: Select all
::: Skills ::: ::: Kills :::
Small Guns ..... 105% Men ............ 069
Big Guns ....... 010% Women .......... 018
Energy Weapons . 017% Super Mutants .. 017
Unarmed ........ 143% Radscorpions ... 020
Melee Weapons .. 068% Rats ........... 118
Throwing ....... 030% Floaters ....... 004
First aid ...... 085% Centaurs ....... 002
Doctor ......... 117% Robots ......... 013
Sneak .......... 045% Dogs ........... 022
Lockpick ....... 102% DeathClaws ..... 001
Steal .......... 040% Plants ......... 002
Traps .......... 077% Geckos ......... 011
Science ........ 124% Aliens ......... 037
Repair ......... 086% Giant Ants ..... 083
Speech ......... 107%
Barter ......... 053%
Gambling ....... 030%
Outdoorsman .... 081%
Upon playing with such an "all-around average guy", I'd inverst 30% less in speech, 35% less in Doctor and probably a bit less in Lockpick, although I like being able to pick the lock on the secondary elevator in SAD to avoid the two forcefields with access to the combat armours, and they're quite hard to lockpick.
Now with the extra points, I'd raise Energy weapons, probably take a perk to tag it (as if you're under 20, you don't get the 20% Tag bonus. really annoying), and also increase small guns...

lol, mad max style, sounds awsome.
someone should make a mod that removes all the power armor and makes other armor look more shabby, and thrown together.
also, if possible, change the highway man so it has spikes and shit, lol
or add a pump action shotgun, if that was in the movie... i only saw Beyond the thunderdome

You need to see Road Warrior. It's definitely the best of the series.

Red... We we're talking about PLAYING AS MAD MAX, not the optimal way to play in general.
Those are nice stats, indeed, but it ain't Mad Max.

Yeah, but what the heck does gambling, as posted bu someone have to do with Mad Max? Unless you consider the "quests" he took a gamble?
Point was that apart of probably small guns skill, he wouldnt't have specific stats. He'd probably just be generic in it's repartition, just like that char.
Well, ok, so then you wouldn't invest in energy weapons...
