Duck and Cover

I used to hate movies, which is a natural reaction considering the bullshit that you're confronted with when you turn on the TV / go to the local cinema.

Anyway, recently I've had a little more time on my hands so I've started watching movies. I watched A Clockwork Orange recently and thought that it was fucking superb.

Also, while drinking at my friend's place, I discovered his full Hitchcock collection, which I proceeded to acquire. Watched Psycho thus far, absolute fucking sublime from beginning to end. Will watch Birds and the rest soon.

Also, got hold of this movie that sounds pretty promising: Slaughterhouse Five.

Anybody got good movies to recommend? I'm not exactly looking for 2 hours of brainless entertainment, I like movies to have a little more essence. So, basically I need a list of classics.

Well, it is obvious that there are too many awesome movies to list here, but from what I've illegally downloaded and watched during the last month or so, these recent (and not so recent) flicks should be worth watching:

The Assassination of Jesse James by the too long of a motherfucking movie title to remember correctly

The Proposition (after seeing this, I totally look forward to seeing The Road)

iirc this is generally how people become film nerds:
1. watch everything by stanley kubrick (gateway director)
2. get really obsessed with some american director (robert altman & martin scorcese are good ones, and it's likely you have seen a handful of their films already)
3. gradually foster detached interest in foreign film (everyone seems to end up seeing most of kurosawa's stuff as well as eight and half, amarcord, jules et jim.)

From your taste of movies you like I'm not sure if you will like any of my movies but since your a noob to movies give the ma shot;

Terminater 2 is a very thought provoking action/adventure movie
Predator is just pure entertainment
Heat is a crime type of drama which is really good
Braveheart is a very inspirational movie, don't listen to the stuck up movie nerds

If you like those then there are others that are similar that you will enjoy.

If youre looking for the greatest western of all time- The Good, the bad and the ugly. Robocop, The Big Lebowski, Into the Wild, Akira, Ong Bak The Thai Warrior, Boondock Saints, Eraserhead, I AM Legend, Shrek 1&2

Oh and the Batmna & Robin movie from the 60's or seventies... where the Penguin dehydrates the United Nations.

and Space Mutiny.

I like me some David Lynch, Cronenberg, John Carpenter, Kurosawa, Oliver Stone, Coppolla, Jim Jarmusch, Coen Brothers, Paul Verhoven, Ridley Scott, Sam Peckinpaugh.

Lately I'm on a Takashi Miike kick, I still can decide if there's any substance under all the shock though.

Anything with Mel Gibson because Mel is the fucking bomb.

12 Monkeys- Great Sci-fi time traveling post-apoc movie (with viruses instead of nukes).

Unforgiven- good semi-modern Western starring Clint Eastwood, probably one of his bests.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid- Classic western that is a must watch even if you don't particuarly care for westerns.

No Escape- Good prison island escape movie starring Ray Liotta.

Total Recall- Governor Arnold on Mars, 'nuff said.

- Lars Von Trier (dogville, dancer in the dark, the idiots)
- Akira Kurosawa (7 samurai; Ran; Rashomon; Throne of Blood)
- Jim Jarmush (broken flowers; down by law; night on earth; coffee and cigarettes; dead man)

and some guys whose style you gotta like to watch their flicks:
- Fallini (you need to grow up to enjoy him and I'm not saying this to sound smart) - eight and a half; the sweet life.

cronenberg's newest movie, eastern promises, is brilliant.

a quick glance at my dvd collektion revealed the following recommendations:
28 days later, le fabuleux destin d'amélie poulain, big trouble in little china, blues brothers, casino, city of god, cry-baby, dawn of the dead (the new one), escape from ny, from dusk till dawn, goodfellas, good night & good luck, lock stock & two smoking barrels, pianist, reservoir dogs, rounders, running man, scarface, schindler's list, shaun of the dead, silence of the lambs, sin city, taxi driver, walk the line, warriors

plus everything everyone else mentioned and stuff

Speaking of Hitchcock, try Notorious and Strangers on a Train. Both better than Psycho, IMHO. Vertigo is another must-see of his.

Oh by the way, when you make the step to become a partisan combatant or support partisan combatants you have implicitly accepted that the enemy will burn, rape and kill your people until extinction if they caught. That's how war works.

For a good, multifaceted movie about the Eastern front, where there are no good guys and bad guys, I recommend Cross of Iron.

Another great WWII movie is Hell in the Pacific - the whole movie is Lee Marvin an Toshiro Mifune alone on an island fighting to the death.
