"Creating Collectibles" Diary by Pete Hines

Post by cazsim83 »

<strong>[ Community -> Article ]</strong> - More info on <a href="#Bethesda Softworks">Company: Bethesda Softworks</a>

<p><a href="http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/home/ho ... Bethesda's Fallout site</a> has a new diary up, by none other than Pete Hines, Head of Marketing, and Product Manager.</p><p>Recently, we announced that Fallout 3 was going to have an optional package sold as a <a href="http://www.duckandcover.cx/forums/viewt ... ollector's Edition</a>, and that in a <a href="http://www.duckandcover.cx/forums/viewt ... 94">Polish poll's results</a>, fans wanted the possibility of having an additional water flask, bottle of Nuka-Cola, or a T-shirt. Well, Pete Hines (with some help) did some brainstorming and came up with a "Survival Edition" - for an additional $50 (USD), exclusive to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?ur ... zon.com</a>. The Survival Edition comes with *drum roll please* a limited-edition, limited-volume, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html/ ... ip-Boy3000 clock.</a></p><p>Oddly enough in my Amazon search, I could only find PS3 and XBOX360 versions available, although <a href="http://bethblog.com/index.php/2008/06/0 ... -boy/">The Bethblog</a> does mention a PC version. The total, in US Dollars, for the Survial Edition is $129.99, plus applicable tax.</p><p>Here is the excerpt, in Hines' own words, of the magic moment:</p><blockquote dir="ltr" style="margin-right: 0px"><p><em>Probably a year or so ago, I was sitting in my office working on some things, and had an idea to build an actual Pip-Boy 3000. Well, a replica of one anyway. A big thing that looked just like the one in the game. I went downstairs and talked to Todd about it and he liked it and we started talking about how we might do it. We talked to some different companies about how we might pull it off. We looked at a lot of different approaches. </em></p><p><em>At one point we seriously looked into the idea of building one that would actually work and interface with the game on some level. That turned out to be a huge problem technically - getting it to work on three different platforms, and 10,000 issues here and there. So we bagged that and just went back to the original idea of &ldquo;something that looks just like the one in the game, and it sits on my desk.&rdquo; We liked the idea of having it function as a watch so it did something as well&hellip;not just an inanimate object that sat there.</em></p><p><em>We spent a tremendous amount of time going back and forth designing this thing. Mike Wagner worked on helping them figure out the scale of it, Istvan &ndash; well, Istvan pretty much did everything to make it look exactly like it was supposed to. Eventually we settled on a look for the thing in general. We&rsquo;re still finalizing the screen, but it&rsquo;ll have a pretty basic watch/clock interface. As I&rsquo;m typing this I have the only one currently in existence sitting on my desk. Just a form test to make sure the proportions are right and knobs and buttons are in the right place. But even though it&rsquo;s just black with nothing on the screen, it&rsquo;s still really cool. So I can&rsquo;t wait to see what one looks like when it&rsquo;s finished.</em></p></blockquote><p>So, who's going to be the first to break into Pete's office and take the only Pip-Boy3000 clock in existence (albeit unfinished)? I might be tempted to buy the deluxe edition, if it has an alarm clock function...although Jen might kill me. No word on whether or not the alarm would play "Maybe" or "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire".</p><p>Feel free to read Pete Hines' full diary entry <a href="http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/vault/d ... <p>Spotted @ <a href="http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums">Bethesda Forums</a></p>

I will NOT give them my money, i am saving it for the next mass effect which will fucking own if they do this: MAKE THe PLANETS UNIQUE. i have riven over a million different colours of terrain and i still fell like i have only been to like 2 planets total. Good game but shit implementation. Also losing one of my friends was the easiest choice i had to make, it was the dude with the bas skin and no weaponry skills whatsoever. If you are going to make me kill off a crew member make sure that is is a useful one not the shit guy who i only used when i was forced to. Also the sound in the game is total shit if you dont have x fi so fix that shit up too. ending was quite cool. KOTOR was more fun imo.

kind of off track there.

ne way i dont like bethesda. They are like donkey penises to me, i dont like them, they do however like themselves, and i am sure drunk squid loves them.

130 bucks is pretty fucking ridiculous. The extra shit probably costs $20 to manufacture. What an absolute rip-off. Fuck you bethesda.

The sad thing is, I want to get this survival edition. However, they don't actually ship to Taiwan so I'm screwed.

I just picked up the collector's edition at Gamestop today - cost about $83 USD after taxes.

I seriously considered the Pipboy clock but 50 bucks is just too much for something that doesn't even have an alarm. It may look plastic-y but it reminds me of all those cheap plastic toys (probably from Taiwan *wink*) that I got growing up in the 80's.

@ KoC - if there's anybody you trust in the US or the UK maybe they could buy it for you and ship it? Not sure what shipping costs to Asia but you're already paying 50 bucks for the clock.... :eyebrow:

Tried ordering it as well. No dice.

Most are going to buy it. I doubt many have said, or even mean, that it'll be a lousy game.
Just a very lousy Fallout 3.

Yeah, but my choice isn't there.
I'm downloading it, and if it's good, I'll buy it.

...

I guess I should just check the "download" option, since I doubt I'll actually support Bethsoft in this endeavor..

You can pre-order the Collector's Edition, or the Survivor Edition (CE plus a Pipboy clock), but the game isn't going to be released until "Fall 2008" - although Gamestop swears it's Oct 9 - I just laughed and said "oh, okay."

Killzig - if that's you logged in as hidden - you're my hero.

(Update taken from briosafreak's Fallout 3 blog @ wordpress.com)

Marc: Hey! We Europeans want this survival edition too! Why cant we pre-order it through Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk even.

Pete: I don’t know that you can’t order it from there. I’m not sure how Amazon works from another country, whether you can trick/force it to let you see the .com version, how that works. You definitely would want the PC version if you can make it work so you don’t have PAL/NTSC issues.

Rivithed: is the clock battery powered or outlet powered?

Killzig: Does the clock have any alarm/radio function built in?

Pete: It’s battery powered. I need to get some pics up of the production piece because I think folks think it’s a clock.

It’s not a clock. It’s a Pip-Boy. It looks like it would go on a wrist/arm. It has a hinge and opens up. It’s built to mirror the one in the game, exactly.

However, the box will say on it “Do not wear this. And you should never do that. It would be terrible to walk around with one on your arm.

Killzig: Also doesn’t help that amazon calls it a “Pip-boy 3000 digital clock.

Pete: It’s a Pip-Boy first and foremost. We just wanted it to do something, so we built it some functionality so while it’s sitting in your desk, or your room, it does something.

Killzig: And that something is ‘it tells time’ ?

Pete: Yes killzig.
We didn’t want it to just be an cool replica of something from the game, we wanted it to serve a function as well, so that’s what we came up with.

Working on a pic for it now.

For scale purposes, if it were to put it on your arm — which we strongly advise against — it’d take up a good bit of your forearm.

Killzig: So no radio/alarm like the pipboy?

Pete: We aren’t done with the functionality yet, so I can’t tell you one way or the other.

Just added two photos Mike took of the production sample we have here in the office.

We know what it is, and isn’t, and legally are confined on how we can describe it and how it can be used. That’s all I can tell you.
