Death Proof

One of my cable channels was showing Grindhouse last night, and I managed to catch the last 5 minutes of Planet Terror before Death Proof started. Can't say much about Planet Terror, other than that the ending is really fucking gory, but Death Proof was 10 pounds of awesome in a 5-pound bag. For real, why did everyone say this was the more boring half? I thought it was a hoot.

I agree. I liked Death Proof more than Planet Generic.

Wow. Not what I expected from this thread. All I can say is "oh fuck yes" cause Death Proof was goddamned brilliant AND fun as hell.

I thought that both were shit.
Paying tribute to some fucking decades old school of cinematography is no excuse for making a bad movie, which I found both of them to be.

Death Proof rocked, something about Kurt Russel I guess.

I liked it more but at the time when it came out everyone thought it was a bit boring. I actually got bored of Planet Terror because it was like the same shit over and over. Also the Mexican guy who played the main character was probably the worst wannabe bad guy ever.

I don't like the ending for Death Proof though.

The freeze frame beatdown? That shit was inspired!

Death Proof was well-structured, especially the extended version(never saw the double feature); two distinct parts with slow and fast-paced scenes in both. The lap dance scene was pretty hawt.

I'd recommend the movie just because of Kurt Russell.

I get the feeling I wouldn't be able to tolerate the full version, because the one in Grindhouse felt long enough as it was. It's not supposed to be the kind of movie you spend a lot of time with.

firstly, this is old as shit. Didn't we dicksucks this already? Strange..
Anyhow, PiP says Death Proof was great.
I saw a "standalone" version, does it mean it's the extended version? If that's the case, nothing too long about it, Subby.

I was just disappointed the girls actually win over Kurt. I so wanted him to destroy them.

guess Quentin chose a traditional take on "poetic justice" in film, or something D:

Well if Kurt Russell and the old school machismo he represents weren't impotent, then it would kind of underscore the weakness of the first group of cunts. No?

I had the same feeling but Tarantino talked about it on shows in how he made an ending that was very fitting for the type of film.

I don't quite get what your trying to say but I assume its either very literal and sophisticated or that it would be pointless to have the same ending for 2 groups of girls?

Well, I think the film did a kickass job of examining gender roles. It was also very critical of the modern stereotypical "girl". The first group of twats did essentially nothing but talk about bullshit and getting dick. They talked a big talk but in the end they were chickenshit. Jungle Julia being the loudest and most pompous of all, yet she gets the sad piano music in the hilariously melodramatic text message scene. I dunno, what I got from that whole first half was "whatever these bitches get, they bring it on themselves".

This was reinforced with the second group of girls who very clearly didn't give two shits about gender roles and playing the victim. When faced with the "big bad man" they did the same shit any male character would have done in an action film, they whooped his ass. I thought Kurt Russel's touch where he cried like a bitch was brilliant because it underscored the weakness of the first group of cunts by exposing the impotence of this "big bad man" figure.
