is coming, looking interesting

I've never actually played FEAR (1) but from what I gather it's a really good scary FPP, so number 2 is going to my 'watch list'.

When I play FPS, I still only stick to Half-Life and Counterstrike.
Half-Life = because in comparison to it, everything feels like a corridor shooter. When I want that, I just play Doom II, because no other game seems to have outdone it in that perspective.
Counterstrike 1.6 = still the only real FPS where skill is extremely rewarding and scaling.

I played the first FEAR for a couple of hours and to be honest, it got old pretty quickly. It wasn't scary, not even spooky or even jumpy in the least. It really did feel like a corridor shooter, because for the most part, you were walking in corridors and shooting dudes. The adrenaline thing was "cool" for about an hour, after that it just became a tool that you used to beat set pieces that you couldn't do without.

[edit]I now actually watched the demo and it seems like they have picked up on exactly the same issues that I whinged about (I put the demo loading and then started typing, because on this POS internet shit takes ages to buffer). Let's hope that they really did learn their lesson and get rid of the repetetiveness of the first game. However once again, as you can read from the following paragraph, I hope they will fix the guns, because that is essentially what FPS is about, shooting dudes in the face. Stereotype shotgun and machinegun are already given, but I really hope that they improve them beyond the pieces of shit that they were in the first game.

I.e: Why not have a Desert Eagle style pistol from Counterstrike? Not for the image associated with the gun, but to basically provide a potent sidearm when one is needed that can also be used as a primary.
Also, burst modes. Make 'em good, make 'em worth it. [/edit]
Oh and the guns pissed me off, for being shit. I cannot believe how basically no-one seems to get this right (except for CS), but in most FPSs, guns handle like shit. You cannot really learn to use a gun, because well there's nothing to learn about it. Hitting something from a distance is pretty much random, i.e. target, hold button down and spray n' pray. No real control reflexes are required / available to shoot more accurately. Same goes for Half Life 2. I'd be in love with that game if they managed to get their fucking guns right. I think the only other game in which I recall guns handling well was Farcry, but it's been too long since i played it.

It looks like there's too much shooting in it to actually be scary, kinda like in Doom 3. Call of Cthulhu, on the other hand, was quite enjoyable. There was more sneaking around and trying to stay hidden -action going on and the enemies were fewer.

I've never actually played Fallout (1,2) but from what I gather it's a really good deep RPG, so number 3 is going to my 'buy list'.

actually half life (2) for me was quite the 'rail' shooter. Not exactly corridor, couse you saw the sky, but rail as there was a restricted path. Stalker was better in beating the linearity.

apparently they want to fix this in the new game - oh you've noticed in the next paragraph.

well it's another kind of gameplay I guess and I didn't mean 'scary' is the essential factor.

CoC had great potential and 'hotel escape' level is a gaming masterpiece, but for me it got repetitive monster shooter after a while.

I'm a bit confused as to why a Call of Cthulu film was never made. It has the right story for a pretty epic film.

I found Asinine Acronym amusing for the following reasons :

Entertaining, if inevitably repetitive, gun-play.
Varied and well realised environments.
Occasionally competent A.I.
Complex, empathic characters.
A shotgun useful beyond nose-to-nose range.
Thrilling, masterfully paced plot.
Hilarious muzak.
Cannibalism.

Irritants included :

Mandatory burst fire.
Frequent homage/plagiarism to/of tepid horror films.
Alertness contingent resilience in opponents.
A certain invulnerable NPC.

Possibly others, I have forgotten.

If one is not driven to eye gouging by the original, the expansions are marginally worse/better. Variable mileage. Nonetheless, am glad that they will be ignored by the sequel. :drunk:

I've been playing F1 off and on for a month now, (no expansion) and there are scary parts, but it keeps reminding me of Condemned with all the supernatural "oh look it's fake but NOW it's real OMFG" kind of stuff.

Not bad, def worth playing, but you won't kill yourself if you never play it.

Trivia: 90210 was one of the great inspirations for Lovecraft, which is visible in many of his works, fyi. O' the horror.

The only fun I had with F.E.A.R was watching this guy play it. Other than that it's one of the most boring, repetative and overrated shooters I've ever had the misfortune of playing.

I'm just saying it reminded me of it, that's all - just saying if you've played Condemned it has the same feel - all of a sudden things get all supernatural creepy and you can't tell if it's fake and it'll disappear or if it's real and you're going to start getting your ass kicked. Not a bad thing, but if you played Condemned and didn't like it, you probably won't like FEAR either.

Both how both did it are completely different. FEAR was pretty blatent, while Condemned was pretty subtle, with film grain, colour leeching, etc. FEAR was just overly *OMG BOO*.

The ending is very fucking weird, it is a clifffhanger, not as scary as the first but their are sprits that attack and Alma herself attacks you, a lot more weapons laser gun (cuts people in half) better bolt rifle, and you can use Powered armor combat is way better then the first, but not as scary as i said before.
