If your beliefs don't stand up to logical scrutiny, your options are to ignore the logic or re-examine your beliefs.
This kid must have been pretty sheltered and never had anyone disagree with him before in order to blow his brains out.

Good Riddance. The way I see it, science is the next stage in our mental evolution (with religion being previous stage). Science is made up of just as much BS as religion in my opinion, with all the bizarre, contridacting theories, but we have to reach that stage in order to proceed. What this kid basically did was declare his mind's incapability of reaching this new level by offing himself.
Dawkins is more badass now.
I do think, however, that professors should tone it down a bit with the editorial shit in their classes, mostly because I'm sick of liberal ranting mixed into my history.

While I do agree and make a constant note to tell others that science is what has brought us from the past, and will take us to the future, theories...Dogmeatlives wrote:...Science is made up of just as much BS as religion in my opinion, with all the bizarre, contridacting theories, but we have to reach that stage in order to proceed.
DML, theories are simply possible reasons why something works a certain way. The more expirience and testing feeds into a theory, the more creedence it is given. Only when a theory is proven wrong is it disapproved or modified. Theories can rarely contradict eachother, as an event will either prove one and disprove the other, or vice-versa.
And why the hell is it that conservatives always get pissed when liberals start passionately discussing things? Sure, we rant, but liberals for the most part don't start whining or groaning when conservatives do. And conservatives have been doing it a helluva lot longer and stronger than liberals have.
Without googling any names, how many liberals can you name that rant on a constant basis? As of this moment, conservative guys, who make a living out of telling the world their groundbreakingly-important opinions, that I can name are:
Limbaugh
Imus
Hannity
Combs
Cavuto
O'Reilly
I'm sure the list goes beyond the reaches of my short-term memory, but seriously. Liberals tolerate conservatives, and it's not too much to ask to want the same in return.
Beyond that, I honestly doubt that the book was the sole reason the kid killed himself. I had a similar situation arise recently in my life; Tucker had a promising life, but he shot himself in the head... the only two people who knew why wouldn't say, and it all just seemed... like it didn't fit.
In any case, The God Delusion has a chrome book sleeve. Dawkins was always ballin'.
Not necessarily. Natural selection does not necessarily provide that the strongest or smartest are the ones who prosper, but rather, those most suited to their environment.Superhaze wrote:Kid looks like a swell guy. Idiocracy made a great point of that.

There is a basic wiring in the human brain to detect patterns in everything. Think of it as a survival trait. It is not limited to humans, mind you, but coupled with this "intelligence" it becomes very good at finding patterns in everything. Even in white noise.
Finding god(s) is just a byproduct of mammalian evolution. Humanity will probably not conquer this baseline urge by the time it is too late (which was probably a few thousand years ago).

You know everyone in the military doesn't have a job fighting, right? Veteran these days is defined as anyone who served a term.Kashluk wrote:Yeah... The fact that the boy's been killing people for a living right after he got pubes doesn't have anything to do with his mental instability.

You know, there's logic behind that, but I'd never considered it. The word "Veteran" seems to incite an image of expirience, but I would say work expirience and combat expirience are really two very different thingsRetlaw83 wrote:You know everyone in the military doesn't have a job fighting, right? Seriously though, this doesn't really need to be dragged on anymore
