Duck and Cover

(Granted, I was half an hour late because I got pulled over for running a light, but I didn't really miss any of the main plot.)

The story, for those who haven't caught the trailer, is that a Vietnam vet [Eastwood], stops a kid from stealing his car and later stands up to a miniature asian street gang, thus becoming a local hero among the asian populace of town.

Here's the thing: the acting... is horrible. The only person who stands out to any degree is Eastwood, and even he lacks his previous abilities to perform. The only thing that saves him is his consistent racial slurrs that literally have you laughing most of the time-- that, and the ending credits where he's singing softly with the same coarse voice that spilled the words "gook", "zipperhead", and "chink" consistently over the course of the movie.
For an old timer, he kicks some ass, too. The action isn't amazing, but alone, I s'pose I could say it was almost worth the price of admission. The racism, on the other hand, was worth more.

Overall, it's not a bad movie, though it's got a fairly-strong anti-killing message to it. I know we here at DACK generally don't go for that, but for a relic like Eastwood, it's worth taking a taste of. If you've got the time, I suggest going and seeing it; if not, get a rip off bittorrent.

The Wrestler does a lot of the same shit as Gran Torino without being pretentious or heavy handed. The older Eastwood gets the more obvious he apparently feels he needs to be. Don't know why. So yeah, The Wrestler. Check it out, ya'll.

I think he's a godawful arrogant cunt who likes to fake brilliance by diluting his simple plotted (not a bad thing) films with incoherent pseudo-metaphysical babble. Still, he pulled his head out of his ass on this one and the end result is one hell of a well directed film.
