Cannes 2009

Post by PiP »

what a selection of names this year:
# ANTICHRIST directed by Lars VON TRIER
# BAK-JWI (THIRST) directed by PARK Chan-Wook
# BRIGHT STAR directed by Jane CAMPION
# DAS WEISSE BAND (THE WHITE RIBBON) directed by Michael HANEKE
# INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS directed by Quentin TARANTINO
# LOOKING FOR ERIC directed by Ken LOACH
# LOS ABRAZOS ROTOS (BROKEN EMBRACES) directed by Pedro ALMODÓVAR
etc

thoughts? opinions?

I think a prize for Almodovar is long due as he's never got a golden palm or even grand prix but then again I don't know what the new film is like.

Almodovar's movies are great, but always the same.

Personally, I'm looking forward to Haneke's White Ribbon.

Haneke and Von Trier? Both doing horror? It's gonna be a good fucking year. Also the new Quentin and Pedro films should be good.
my vocabulary skills is above you.

which reminds me, 'La pianiste'/'the piano teacher' should actually be at least a bit popular at dac, no? Not extreme enough I guess and too outlandish..

I don't know about Haneke's ribbon but Park's made a horror so all you Old Boy fappers can get excited. Also Von Trier's thing is with W. Dafoe and someone here is a fan, IIRC.

I'm living about 2h away from Cannes right now and I might go there for the weekend, not sure if it's going to be worth the bother though, it's not like I'll see any new movies or anything and I probably wouldn't watch them even if I could.

Well, the likes of Subhuman and Cloudnine are really classy queers, and I don't see them bothering with this tripe.

Some pretty asinine movies have won the top Cannes awards, along with some great ones. I'm mildly interested but don't really follow the festival from year to year. I'd go if I had the chance, though.

Class act homos, no doubt. Still, the classy ones can be fickle in matters of taste.
