Want a real Pipboy?

Post by King of Creation »

[ Community -> Article ]

The world of Fallout is slowly becoming real. In addition to living in your very own Vault, you can now get your very own Pipboy. Check it out via Electricpig:

Glacier Ridgeline W200, haven’t we seen you somewhere before? Yep, this wrist-mounted computer comes off like a slightly more modernised version of Fallout 3’s Pip-Boy 2000 – but with a crucial difference in that it’s real!

The Ridgeline W200 clamps over your arm and lets you compute to your heart’s desire, whether your OS of choice is Windows CE or Linux. It sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen and keypad to handle control duties, and you can add modules for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS to expand its functionality.

At about 290g the Ridgeline W200 not exactly feather-light, but the reinforced magnesium alloy case should be tough enough to withstand almost anything a typical day can throw at it (but will it survive a Supermutant’s nailboard, hm?).

We’ll keep an eye out for UK launch info and pricing.

Thanks to Yonmac for pointing it out in the forums.

"The Ridgeline W200 will offer “continuous connectivity regardless of the user’s location thanks to its Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity options. This device weighs in at 10.2 ounces and will come with 3.5″ touchscreen display with 11 backlit keys. The W200 is powered by a Marvell PXA270 400MHz processor, 128MB RAM and 1.2GB of internal memory, USB 1.1 connectivity and a rugged exterior that can function in a temperature range of -10 to 50 degrees Celsius. No word yet on when the Ridgeline W200 will be released or how much it will cost."

Fallout 3 A Bomb screen saver. PIP3k's were wristmounted. Not the 2k's.

The article fucked up, because FO3 had the "Pipboy 3000." Beth trying to make an association of it being the third game.

So, 2 questions:

1- Any word on vanity casings that look like a Pipboy 3000? Something more retro-futuristic would be a bit more tasty.

2- How were 2ks mobile? Just something you carried with you in a backpack, or what? Didn't see anything with a skim of the Vault article concerning it

They were worn around the wrist - that's why the interactivity with it and the screen detailing what's what was so lackluster.

I always imagined the PiPBoy from Tactics as some sort of PSP-sized device kept in a belt pouch.

Vault it. I need proof. As far as I can recall the PIP2k's were a handheld device, not a wristmounted one. They would've been a beast to wear on your wrist just judging by button size and general layout. It'd be like having an iPad on your wrist, but slightly more useful.

Fallout Wiki wrote:The original Pip-Boy 2000 was a hand-held device[2], though some very cumbersome models were made to be worn on the arm. These models were unofficially called Pip-Boy 2000 Plus, and one of them was owned by the Vault Dweller and later the Chosen One[3]

The article fucked up, because they probably don't give two shits about the "version" of some imaginary PDA used in a computer RPG sometime last decade
