<strong>[Company -> Update]</strong>
As expected from the sale of <a href="http://shiny.com/">Shiny</a>, <a href="Http://interplay.com/">Interplay</a> has <a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/020814/dew0 ... nounced</a> they earned <b>$20.9 million</b> last quarter. Here's a bit of that:<blockquote>For the second quarter ended June 30, 2002, the Company reported net income of $20.9 million, or $.22 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $12.4 million, or ($.34) per share, in the same period last year. The net income reported in the second quarter of 2002 was primarily the result of the recording of a $28.8 million gain on the sale of Shiny Entertainment. Net revenues for the second quarter 2002 were $11.8 million versus $14.8 million in the same period a year ago, a decrease of 20 percent. Gross profit margin for the second quarter 2002 was 10 percent, compared to 26 percent in the second quarter of 2001. Finally, operating losses decreased 38 percent from prior year to $7.1 million from $11.4 million reported in the second quarter 2002 and 2001, respectively.</blockquote>Also in that <A href="http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/020814/dew023_1.html">news wire</a> is about about <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?d=t&s=IPLY">IPLY</a>'s troubles with <A href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?d=t&s=^IXIC" ... kquote>The Company also announced that it will submit to its stockholders for approval at its September 17 Annual Meeting of Stockholders, a proposal to provide for a 1-for-10 shares reverse stock split in an effort to, among other things, increase the company's per share price to comply with NASDAQ's $1 minimum share price requirement.</blockquote><a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?d=t&s=IPLY">IPLY</a> is currently sitting at <b>$.41/share</b> as of market close.

Meaning that without the sale of Shiny, they would have effectively lost money. I figure that Interplay will pump its meager profits into more crap games everyone will avoid like the plague. Then, when they've announced massive losses and have fallen off NASDAQ, some company will buy them and then butcher every liscence owned by Interplay that hasn't been ruined already.
But if we're lucky, the buyer will make and publish Fallout 3 and (hopefully) FreeSpace 3, another franchise that's been buried by IPLAY for no good reason. And if we're really lucky, we might just see these games on PC.

They're currently on "Junior NASDAQ" or "NASDAQ Lite" or something. So they're effectively threatening to kick their arse out of the sandpit as well as the playground.

Well, Interplay makes the decisions what games to make, not Titus. You better put your hopes on IPLAY selling the Fallout licence or selling BIS, like they did with Shiny.
On the other hand, BIS is perhaps the only part of IPLAY not making loss, dunno if they want to sell that. But, that's mainly because of Bioware and BG series(and Fallouts), a lot depends on BIS future games that are in development. It's interesting to see how they succeed with their own projects.

Oddly enough, I just read an articles the other day about how the gaming industry is a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy tech sector.Haplo wrote:It seems like more than half of the tech industry is doing much the same thing...

Interplay, which is currently being CEO'ed by Herve Caen, one of the founders of Titus. It's hard to say that Titus isn't calling the shots with Interplay, not with a straight face.VasikkA wrote:Well, Interplay makes the decisions what games to make, not Titus. Once again Saintie_P points out another way that the IPLY we all knew and loved is eight feet under.Saint_Proverbius wrote:Interplay, which is currently being CEO'ed by Herve Caen, one of the founders of Titus.
