Getting up to speed on FTBOS

Hello!

I have played FTBOS when it came out, but stopped playing when my opponents started playing with laser rifles and I just discovered that my power armor drops my sneak skill significantly :(

I'm back, however, and I was wondering what files I need to get my FTBOS game "up to speed."

I would also like some custom characters (I want to play my game MY way! Don't worry, I don't like god-characters, I just want a sniper that IS a sniper, and a doctor who can do something else besides patching wounds) and I'm interested in some custom character portraits. I've downloaded the 1.27 official patch, do I need anything else? Are there any sites offering some ready-made (must be cool! 8) ) character pics? I've read the custom character tutorial in this site, so I guess I can figure that out, but I don't like making my own pictures, and it won't be that cool for me anyway.

Can I use my characters ON MISSION1, or do I have to wait to dump those 2 people who are with me on the first mission?

I'm having trouble running FTBOS on my notebook PC. Since my parents dominate the PC at home, I've decided to install the game on my notebook, and since my cdrom is busted, I was able to install the game (full install) using virtual cds and a virtual drive (by Nero ImageDrive). My problem is that when I do run the game, it asks me to insert a FTBOS cd, and won't recognise the virtual CD in the virtual drive. Anyone know a way around this?

Thanks for the help! I hope to finish FTBOS this time around, since I finished F1 and F2 and they were great! :)

1.27 is fine. Actually its the most recent update.

Custom portraits...Ive been looking into this myself a few days ago.

Take a picture of whatever u want to display as a portrait and save it in .png format.

Next thing u need to do it load the BOS editor which came with the 1.27 update.

Hit the button that says "png to zar". Convert ur png file, be sure to remember what folder u stored the zar file in so u can easily look it up.

Now u can replace random portraits with ur custom one by overwriting portrait files that are located in core/gui/char folder.

CORE_rec_* files are the ones u should overwrite in order to provide ur recruits of a custom protrait.

Ull have to find out what file belongs to which recruit before u can undertake anything successfully this way.

I know CORE_rec_hm08 is Stitch's portrait and Core_rec_hm09 is that of Stoma

For your CD problem...You can find a no CD crack for FOT there.

We don't discuss warez, CD cracks, or other piracy on this forum.

Love, Hugs and Kisses,

Though creating my very own pic would be cool, I don't think I have the time, patience or skill to do it. I'm not very good at photo editing :) So if anyone knows of ready-made images, or wishes to share their own, I'd be happy to take a look.

Spazmo, thanks! :)

Aside from the 1.27 patch, is there anything else that would be cool to add? I play Jane's F/A-18 and each player's version of the game is different from any other's coz of all the custom "realistic" stuff they put in, so I was just wondering if FTBOS "needs" any other files aside from the 1.27 to make it "better"?

Thank you!

I have just discovered that my notebook PC isn't powerful enough (videocard-wise) to handle the cinematics of FTBOS. Is there any way I can extract these to view separately? What would I need?

I am also experiencing a bit of lag when walking during the first mission. I expect this to be worse later on bigger maps with more people, but I'm willing to take it. However, if somebody could tell me of a way to improve this, some secret recipe perhaps, I'd be really thankful.

Hope someone can help!

What do you mean about moderators? :?:
Actually, yeah, I have PSP 7.04 and ::shameless plug:: am pretty handy with it. Problem is I don't have a scanner, I'm too lazy to find one, my pic isn't that good, and I'm too lazy to make one :)

Can't blame me if I just am tired of the faces of FTBOS and just want to strap a new face on and play... hopefully some cute ones 8)

Got any? Anyone? Come now, don't be shy!

moderations are altered versions of the original game. Comperable with Counter-strike in relation to Half-life.

K, I consider psp7 to be the best 2d graphics software around, so ...in theory you should be able to create your own Portraits.

If you want ill tell you how. Some things are condition to ur portrait looking authentic.

Cute? meaning 18+ blond and blue? i mean...if you want a pic of your girlfriend or just some girl you fancy to show up in FO:T, just post the picture here and ill modify it for you.

It should measure 75 in height and 100 in width in order to work probably.

Oops, sorry, OTB. But I think it is legal if you own a copy of the game. Nonetheless, I won't press the issue.

OTB edited my post in which I reccomended Valkyrie use a No CD crack.

Ehh, actually OTB...., copyworld doesnt support piracy. In order for their cracks to work you need to copy/paste several files in your fallout folder that are nowhere to be found other then on a fully legal copy of the game.

This makes them pretty much useless to any warez-junky.

Well, sorry if I was a bit overzealous then.

I realize that there are legitimate uses for things like no-cd-cracks, but unfortunately these are often abused by less-than-scrupulous gamers and since a number of gaming companies have gone under thanks to piracy -- unfortunately it's usually the smaller, innovative companies rather than the ones that shovel pabulum onto the market, i.e. the ones you want to see go under -- I tend to err on the side of caution.

A word to the wise: not everything needs to be posted on the boards. We do have a PM system. ;)

OTB,

I hope you were not referring to me?
"unfortunately these are often abused by less-than-scrupulous gamers"
:?

Lynxer,
I got the custom character tutorial by Iceycat, I haven't tried it yet tho, and I am willing to listen to what you have to say about custom characters and portraits. Like I said in my first post, I would like some custom characters with my own stats (not like the ones they give you in the game), something like Icewind Dale wherein you create your ENTIRE PARTY. Hope you can help!

Did I say, "unfortunately these are often abused by less-than-scrupulous gamers like Valkyrie"? No, I didn't. I wasn't referring to you, unless of course the shoe fits, in which case I recommend wearing it.

easy, just recruit a specific number of initiates, load the savegame editor and manipulate stats manually there. You can alter a wide range of settings, varying from stats to perks.
There is no limitation to the stats/skill/perks added, so if you were to prefer cheating, this would be an option too.

Well, i used it for the same about the same purpose as you. I just didnt like some stats that had been applied to several recruits. Like the ghouls having to cope with the burden that is "the glowing one"

Thanks! Just wanted to make sure there were no "underlying" ideas. 8)

Lynxer,
So it is easier to edit the savegame (I presume using Bosche?) rather than using the official editor? Hmmm.... I hope I can edit the pics too.

You can't edit portraits with the savegame editor. 8)

Here's what...just post a picture in this thread and ill turn it into a portrait, k?

This question is about portraits, is there anyway I can use Paladin Solo's potrait for my main character? If so were can I get it?

I would imagine it would be with the rest in the portraits, possibly in a special NPC portrait folder. Just look around in you FOT directory until you find it. Don't take my word on it, though. I'm probably wrong.
