Here's something a lot of you might find very, very interesting - it's a chat log with the good people at Black Isle Studio's, which happened just after Fallout 2 was released (11th of November, 1998, to be exact). Oh yes, there's some golden stuff in there... the sweet smell of nostalgia is especially strong with this one. An example:
waleed - Recently, role-playing seems to have decayed in number and quality significantly ... there just isn't the range of games that used to be available. What do you see as the future of role-playing?
Matt_Black_Isle - Fallout 3
Matt_Black_Isle - oops
Meghan - Hahaha
waleed - :)
Matt_Black_Isle - ;)
Xander - :)
Feargus_Black_Isle - I think like any genre there are Ebs and Flows. 1st person shooters and realtime strategy games really went through the industry and the publishers wanted to capitlazie on those genres.
waleed - In a more general sense? AI?
Feargus_Black_Isle - That's not necessarily what they should have done, but it is what happened.
waleed - Multi-player?
Feargus_Black_Isle - I think what you will see is an increase in the number of RPG's, but probably not as many as there are 1st person shooters.
Feargus_Black_Isle - As for RPG's...
Feargus_Black_Isle - It all depends on the game itself. Some of them lend themselves to multiplayer, some don't.
Feargus_Black_Isle - As a game maker, I don't want to put the newest feature in just to put it in.
Ahhh, the good old days, eh? Life was simpler then... anyway, you can read the entire chat log <a href="http://www.duckandcover.net/fallout2/in ... b>EDIT: Since Kreegle always misses the "funnies", I'll point out this:

Feargus_Black_Isle - Well, I would love to be able to use the same engine again - but I don't think most people would recieve that very well. We would really be accussed of using an old engine too many times.
So, two Fallout games using that engine is the right amount without using it "too much", but there's eight titles using the Infinity Engine. Gotta love it!

Thanks to Deathy for noticing that.
Fallout 2 chat log! Yes, that's right.
