Adding a new weapon to the character sprite might not be easy. What kind of weapon are you going to add? The easiest thing to do is to make a new weapon sprite which falls into the main weapon categories: pistol, smg, rifle, minigun, etc. Then just follow the procedure for creating this new sprite in this section:

thanx man!

Um, you can't "just add a enw weapon", as the game uses the internal names as reference, and simply wouldn't know about new ones you added.
That and well, chances are any new images you add to a current animation would look out of place in respect to the original animation as you don't have the model to remake it with...
So well, best thing to do would be to start one from scratch... Of course you need a proper sprite editor, and I don't think Spray can handle editing of chracters (though I could hopefully be wrong about this, I never gave it a good look)...

It can't. Crashed every time I even attempted to look at one (char).

Right you won't be able to make it look like the character is holding the exact weapon. It will have to be simulated with the existing categories of weapons. But you can make a new weapon that shows in your inventory. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
Yeah, use
Spray

Oh right...
Try loading a demo version character, it might work on Spray... Reason it crashes would be the same as the reason my own viewer used to crash on character sprites: it doesn't support the "new compressed format"... Maybe you people could build something up from there - and use my own viewer to "find" the "missing" animation names (ie animations not found in the demo). It should work if Spray was programmed correctly
Wait a minute!
Spray doesn't support the multiple layers... Which means the characters would look screwed up - although you could still build something from the demo version chars, you'd more or less need to didtch the mutilayer support (which is a pain in the ass unless you set it up properly).
To understand what the heck I'm talking about, load any character in my editor, and start fiddling with the 4 layer checkboxes...

Hm, thought that keeping the demo ver on disk would eventually pay off. Thanks for the tip Red. It probably will not do me good, but you never know.

Also a tile editor bit both where never released. We're lucky to have Red and Domin to provide us with a bit less sophisticated, but similar in function tools nevertheless.

Heh, yeah the tools exist and were used by the Microforte development team. Then they decided that to give those tools to the general public might be a liability. Some evil developer might use them to do a total conversion mod of the game and release it to make millions of bucks. Well at least that is what we were told.....
so,,,,

The article is named "Preview of the editors"... NMA never even got their hands on it... They just had some snapshots of it given from MF, along with explanations...
Back then they weren't sure exactly what they'd release yet, hence the reason the article mentions that they should be released, but as was said several times in this thread, they never were.
