Here's the deal (aka SAVE DAC FROM CERTAIN DEATH)
Here's the deal (aka SAVE DAC FROM CERTAIN DEATH)
As mentioned in the other thread, I've invested a few hours of my time in cleaning up the forum of spam, which nobody else has been doing for about a year now apparently.
I've shut off new registrations because there's nobody around to weed out the spammers. I've also disabled PMs so that spammers can't abuse that either. Any remaining spammers that pop out of the woodwork will be neutralized fast.
Whether there's any point in keeping DAC around in this state remains to be seen, but obviously without any staff around on a daily basis it won't work.

The .cx domain name is renewed until 2021, but that's just the cost of the domain. The site isn't bringing in any income either via the ads or donations. The forum software is completely outdated and not equipped to deal with the droves of spammers assaulting it on a daily basis and would need to be replaced, but without any staff (or funds) that's not going to happen. Running a forum today requires constant maintenance to stay ahead of the spammers.

The cost of converting this old phpBB to XenForo along with a few years' worth of licence renewals would probably be around $700 (this would include hiring a designer to redo the primary DAC style). However, that's literally just the cost of software and designer work. Alongside that someone would need to spend quite a few days arranging all this, then configuring the new XenForo and tweaking it, fixing various issues that would come up and so on. Realistically, $1000+ if I were to do it.
Switching to XF would break the integration of the forums with the website/front page, but fixing that would be a project several times more involved and complicated than just converting the forums, so that would be unlikely to happen without any staff actually interested in doing it.

Yea, it is a lot of money because it also involves a lot of work, so I'm not really expecting it to happen. But hey, if someone wants to spend actual cash on keeping this site up in the future, the donation button is on top of the page. Realistically, without it I'll probably turn the lights off when the domain expires, if not sooner.

There shouldn't be any more spam because I've cleaned it all up and disabled new registrations. However, that only makes the forums usable for existing members who can actually log in still. The forums are effectively locked down.
I could keep it up as it is for as long as the forums still function with the version of PHP available on the server. How long that will be, no one knows. Could be a couple of years still. Just leaving it in this state requires minimal maintenance from me now so as long as at least a few donations come in every year it'll stick around.
