If you sleep or do other things that take time, youre character can get radiated anywhere (the background radiation). Reading books should always be followed by a pack of RAD-away.

Um, no.
You can drink irradiated water while travelling, or go to the toxic caves to get irradiated bu 99% of the time it's becuase you ate some mutated fruit.

I think he means the toxic caves Northwest of Klamath. Just walk around the caves, especially on the green goo. You'll take some damage but you also get a mutated sixth toe as time passes.

if you raid a wall-locker in the toxic caves you can retrieve 2 (3?) rad away packs, expensive and useful :D
also in the toxic caves recruit smiley, and steal his 10 golden gecko skins, useful early in the game

I think even walking/driving in that direction will get you radiated
Go to the casino, live it up and buy some rad away

Nah, radiation happens with events.
I forgot, you also get radiated by mutated rat and ratpigs, and possibly the geckos.
People often think it's just because the place is full of radiation but it's not.

Mutated fruit or the Golden Gecko bites (not slashes) will radiate you in Klamath. The caves just do damage, you can take a friggin' TON of damage in them and not be radiated.
On a sidenote, Gecko radiation is about 1 point worth, so be sure to wait until you've done every quest involving golden geckos before you take Radaway.
And as for the 'background radiation everywhere' thing...really..really no...the only place that did that in any fallout game was the glow in the original, and only about 37 people told you that beforehand. Gecko was maybe supposed to, but it doesn't.

In Toxic Caves? Press the sleep button.
In Toxic Dump? Don't even *dream* about it.

two things.
first of all, why do you want to know how to get radiated ?, to avoid it ? it almost sounds like you actualy *want* to get radiated...
second, what the hell is the toxic dump ? is that a place the same style as the Glow ?

It's a special encounter in Fallout 2. I'm not sure what is the excat luck requirement (Red?), but I know it's low.

No, I'm pretty sure you can get radiated anywhere...if you have the rad-resistance of a furless kitten.

There is no luck requirement to get the toxic dumb, though there could be somewhat greater chances to get it with lower luck.

But it's an evil place. You have to walk through a large map with puddles og goo and tons of radiation not to mention all the fire-geckos looming around.

Tank is right, it is an evil place, for evil people. I had high luck, major negative karma, and there I was. I guess thats why when you enter the area it says something like "you must have really pissed off some one to end up here", or something to that effect.
I think LOW luck or BAD karma will get you this encounter, or perhaps there is a trigger event somewhere else that we don't know about.

I've noticed that when I rest/sleep indoors... the chances of geting radiated are less

I've never been radiated by sleeping. NEVER. There is no event that triggers it.
Every single time I though radiation had "affected me" it ended up being a radiated art who hit me, or I ate an irradiated fruit.
There might be the exception of you not finding a proper source of water in the wild but you actually stop and notice this right away (if it even does radiation damage...)
That's an interesting take on the random encounters, all I remember about me finding it was that it was early on in the game (so low Karma) and I've never managed to get it with high karma (regardless of luck level).
There is no specific trigger for this event, as it's real easy to see those in the game looking (i think) at worldmap.txt.
