Open Source The Wastes?

Post by Dan_Wood »

<strong>[ -> N/A]</strong>

Greetings from Lurvely Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where every day is 80 degrees Farenheight and a 20% chance of rain!

Those wacky gents over at <!-- BBCode Start --><A HREF="http://planethalflife/thewastes" TARGET="_blank">The Wastes</A><!-- BBCode End --> are apparently having a hard go at it and have apparently decided to open source the whole thing due to... whatever it is that keeps them from developing Wasteland Halflife or whatever they're calling it.

It was merely at a whim that I wandered over to their site and was intrigued by the two-for-one sale on NEWS; apparently they had gotten to the RC1 stage... then decided that it's time to wave the white flag.

I quote from their happy site...

<!-- BBCode Quote Start --><TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font size=-1><b>Quote:</b></font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT SIZE=-1 color="FFFFFF"><BLOCKQUOTE>Time for another neighborhood friendly news post. We have reached a milestone in RC1, Absolutely all the weapons are done!!! Akimbos were finished this week with no major hiccups. From here I want to work on finalizing the VGUI and HUD to finish up another major part of the game experience. I know some of you guys want some screenshots because we havent showed any in quite a while. This weekend I will be at a lan in Ohio and will be playtesting the game with roughly 20 other people, and will make a slew of screenshots for you guys. Then after the new HUD is complete i will release yet another batch of screenshots for everyone to see.

We as a development team have also made a decision. We have set an internal release date, just like a major game house. Instead of saying "when its done" we will have RC1 complete by this date, wether feature complete or not, so we may be dropping a few features in favor of implementing them in another patch. Nothing too major, but be noted that Mixed akimbo weapons will NOT be making it in RC1, but they might make a comeback in a patch. While I dont feel too comfortable telling you guys the release timeframe be noted it will be before the snow melts off the ground this winter.</BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE><!-- BBCode Quote End -->

Wow! It might be ready... but wait...

<!-- BBCode Quote Start --><TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font size=-1><b>Quote:</b></font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT SIZE=-1 color="FFFFFF"><BLOCKQUOTE>Well, time to give a status update. First off, I want to sort of delay the Open Source for a bit. For those of you who dont know the team is planning to open source the project, but it wont happen just yet. I would like to open source the mod once RC1 is released however so the community can decide how they want to support the project; but I want a solid ground for you guys to play in the event that no one will continue the work.

</BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE><!-- BBCode Quote End -->

How... nice. Apparently the <!-- BBCode Start --><A HREF="http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~thewastes/ ... =6040#6040" TARGET="_blank">attrition</A><!-- BBCode End --> that comes with a loosely affiliated development team has bested them and it's one last push before they release. Sounds like they're leaving The Wastes to work in the software industry... I hear Black Isle is hiring, kids!

I think this was posted a while ago. It's too bad. If they kept at it WHL could have been huge and easily go retail.

Well Gage has said that he will delay 'open source' for a bit longer and that it wasn't the best phase to use.

A version of RC1 will be released, of that i am sure.

However Posty and his gang have set up there own mod for BF1942 Dead Cities

and Kruddman and his 'crew' have started a mod for Bf1942 as well Badland

and there is also that Wasteland2042 to look forward to...

so its not all bad

Long live the post apocalypse!!!

MMRW this was posted a while ago, but dan posted on it again because it's an opportunity to jump the WHL kids. He's had it out for them ever since they ripped him for his review of version 1.0. Let Danny boy have his fun. After all, he hardly ever posts. WE LUB J00 DAN WOOD!
The answer to your first question is shaddup.

sorry Killan?

but like can I say they haven't flown the white flag of surrender yet...

they are just outgunned and outflanked and holed up in Crumbling dilapidated rustic farmhouse fighting against mutants, with pitchforks
