Ack! Item editing problems

Post by Doyle »

I've been trying to implement a few changes in FO2, but I'm having trouble getting the item editors to work properly. FIC seems to be working fine, but automatically switches the order of the weapon modes when I save the file. Even if a weapon is single shot only, the null mode will be placed in mode 1 and in game the weapons only attack will be the alternate fire. FIME won't even run, it gives me some kind of load error. Can anyone help me out with either of these problems?

Hello,

You might try checking if you have the latest version of each editor.
If you do, then you have to give a little more info on what the problem
is. (ie. FIME doesn't work at all. Does it give you an error message?
If so, what's the message?) It might also help if you can tell us what
OS you are running, and what file(s) from FO2 you have tried to
change.

FIC can only change 1 item into another item of the SAME type.
You'll need FIME to really edit/make items. FIME requires these two
files MSVBVM60.DLL and OLEAUT32.DLL. Check to see if you have
them on your system. If not, you'll have to do a net search and find them.

I'm, by far, no expert on modding, but I've been dabbling with it for
some time now. I hope this helped. If not, I'm certain one of the
more knowledgable modders can.

Sincerely,

FIME just gives me a load error. That's it, just a little box that say "Load error" and then it craps out on me. I have both of the .dlls because I myself have VS6 on my computer.

I'm not trying to change items types at all with FIC, I just want to edit item attributes. No offence, but did you even read my problem? It just switches the firing modes.

BTW Running 2000 professional here.

Hello,

Sorry, that was my mistake. I mistook FIC for the inventory editor,
which ONLY lets you change items from one type to another, and
their quantity. I'm truly sorry.

As to the problem at hand, It seems that FIC doesn't save the Item
Proto files properly. The only way around this (since you cannot get
FIME to work) is to edit the file with a Hex-editor, and fix the error.

The problem with FIME might have to do with your OS. I cannot get
the program to work on my brother's XP system, but it works fine
on my Win98 system.

Again, sorry about the confusion.

Sincerely,
Mutateman

XP does have a compatability wizard that will allow you to load programs in 95 98 me 2000 compatable modes. Once you load them, you need to right click the icon and set the compatability mode for when you start the program.

To access the compatability wizard, click start, move cursor to Programs, then Accessories, then click on Program Compatability Wizard.

Sorry, I was off to pickup a mini-van I just bougth (and my car died when I picked up the mini-van (starter seems dead - she must be jealous)).

Anyway, for FIME, it's actually at version 1.41 (I think, anyway, the current version is no longer 1.1 as the one hosted on DaC). The latest version fixes a few bugs (inlcuding screwy mode stuff and weird things whne putting negative values).

I have Windows XP at home but I never even ran the damn thing (well, the latest version) so I don't know if it has any issues, I'll give it a whirl tonight (and include the link to where to download it since the address provided in the 1.1 readme no longer works).

I don't have XP, though, I have 2000 professional. FIC works, there's just that one bug that drives me nuts.

OK, well, I'm back home now, and it's not FIME but FIC that's been updated and should be working fine.

Sadly though the FIC author's Fallout site is now dead...

Both work fine on my computer though I still didn't check wether they save the pro files properly.

FIME's issue probably won't ever be fixed as MatuX (it's author) is now inactive on the FO scene, so find FIC...

I already downloaded FIC from DAC, but it's doing the mode switch thing I talked about earlier. Do you know where I can get another version?

The latest entry in the version history of mine is
3.5.0.0069. I don't suppose you still have your install file?
I couldn't find a link to FIC on the site...
Did you try looking in the Fallout 2 Files section? That's where I got it.

Don't worry about it, the only difference between the two versions is that his nick changed... If the problem's still there then we're in trouble... I'll contact him and ask about it.

OK, well, this time it was much faster :)

He said that he should have fixed all problems in 3.5x (well, he didn't say that per say but that's how I interpreted what he said).

Anyhoo if you could send the pro file causing trouble (or just tell me which one)... If not all of course and I'll mail it to him.

red@duckandcover.net

Well, you could do it yourself, the email in the readme should be valid.

It's all of them, there's no one problem .pro file.

I went ahead and emailed him about it myself.

Hey, red, if I wanted to edit the hex code manually to switch the modes back, what would I have to do? I already have a hex editor, I just don't have any clue which values I need to change.

Both FIC and FIME include the offsets of the values which need to be changed... So read up on that and you should know what to do.

Err... Not seeing it in FIC, and I don't have FIME on this computer. Any online docs you know of?
