Fallout 3: 3D?

I haven't posted in these forums for many a month, since the khans 'left'.. But i check up on the news, and just read only 5 of the replies to the latest Fallout 3 news about the Feargus Urquhart (FU, whatever :? ) and i becamse quite depressed...

"Noooooooooooooooooo..." I am a completely rabidly insane fan of fallout, it is the best game ever made, and i worship it as it deserves, but if Fallout 3 was made the way you all seem to want it it would be: Fallout 2 returns.

A 3d engine would not be a bad thing, what would be wrong with having Fallout 3 with a similar camera system to Neverwinter Nights for example? It retain all the detail, but with more efficient interactivity with the enviroment and the ability to see the Rapid fire ribcage skinning death in full 3D :twisted: . Don't Moan! Be Happy! Any news regarding the possible eventual existance of fallout 3 is good!

And I am ashamed of you MadMax RW, i see you in every post-apoc community in the world and i never expected such comments from you... Scrapping fallout 3 to make an unlinked 3d post-apoc RPG with a free storyline.... Blasphemy.. Burn heathen!

Wahh.

yes.

Shut it.

I hate you know, as you made me look through the archives looking for this over discussed and pointless topic.
This should be what you, the poster, do before posting threads.

Thread 1

Thread 2

Combine these two threads and get 10 page worth of disscusion that will just be repeted again in this one.

Unless you would convince me otherwise this thread will lock itself in a few days.

The board isn't exactly choking to death on 3D topics. If he wants to bring it up, let him. If others want to discuss it then obviously it's still worth talking about, and if not then it will die on its own.

Thanks for the lone backup doyle ;)

The flamers in the feedback thread to that interview headline are... clearly becoming unhealthily obsessed, I simply want to know what the problem with a 3d engine would be o_O

Are you the dan who used to annoy me on IRC?

Damn the days of Fallout in IRC... I got banned about 5 times a day..

I don't see why we can't discuss about Fallout 3 and 3d in this thread. If T-900 would have posted in one of the older threads, he'd be accused for digging up old topics. Times has changed since the last 3d debate and so have CRPGs too.

I personally think that 2d is still the way to go for CRPGs, but I believe 3d engines will improve in the future and would definitely be an option by the time Fallout 3 is being made. Dungeon Siege and NWN didn't succeed very well, but they had some nice ideas and improvements and they showed in my opinion that 3d does not necessarily suck in CRPGs. Isometric 2d is pretty, it works properly and has been used in previous Fallouts, so in that light switching to 3d might be risky.

I'd like to see Fallout 3 in 3d, for a number of reasons. However, I think the foremost reason for me right now is the modding community. A healthy modding community is always a good thing for a game to have, and although Fallout 2 is doing pretty well in that regard right now, I'd love to see even more of that with Fallout 3. If FO3 uses a 3D engine, it will be a lot easier for modders to create custom artwork for the their games.

I bet the biggest reason is, that you want to see those "cool minigun particles" :P

I think that it is inevitable that Fallout 3 will be in 3D in less it comes out fairly soon. It seems to me that all games are going in the direction of 3D. Though it may not necessarily make the game better by putting it in 3D. Soon any game not fully 3D will be pictured as out of date and marketing people don’t want to make any thing that people are going to call out dated. Like it or not that’s the way things are going. Of course if they start making it now that’s different.

The question is whether it will have 3D graphics or be a 3D game. If it plays much the same as FO 1 & 2 (that is, third-person isometric perspective using mouse to control) but the graphics are in 3D, then why the hell not? But if the game itself is 3D and we get something like Morrowind or Neverwinter Nights, then no.

"But if the game itself is 3D and we get something like Morrowind or Neverwinter Nights, then no." - Spazmo.

Neverwinter nights, turn based, without the radial command menu (Though is was very good in my opinion) some changes to the camera system, and something similar to the old Fallout Damage system, which was suprisingly close to realism (I wub wealism...), + SPECIAL... I don't see a problem :)

Mmm a Mutant Army remnant band with some floaters and centaurs in full 3d... On that note please all tell me how many days it took you to finally decide what shape a floater actually is, and then imagine it in 3d :)

3d engine does not mean a healthier modding community. With proper tools, you can easily make mods for any kind of engine, just look at FoT. The game itself should be the main focus, not the mods.

That wouldn't look too bad in a pretty isometric 2d engine either.

so what it comes down to is which would add more to the game? The answer is niether. But a 2d based game would be cheaper and use more perfected technology. That's where 2d gets the advantage.

2d=1
3d=0

But how much of that has the benefit of new artwork? Very little, I'd wager.

But new artwork isn't nesscary for a mod community to thrive. It's nice but not a requirement.

The ability to create your own artwork adds a lot to the modding community. Look at Half-Life and the good that came out of that game? It's almost like buying several games for the price of one.

Half life is fps shooter. It's appels and oranges. And still I've seen good mods that used the exsiting artwork. But in a fps mod it does kinda suck when they don't have new weapons, which would require new art.

But still it's not a need and that's especially true of rpg mods.

Never claimed it was a need, but it's nice.
