Talk to the kid in front of the bar. He'll tell you he lost Mr. Nixon. Nixon is hidden behind the bar. Bring him back to the kind, who will tell you the wrench is under the rocks.

Um, ok... stop duel posting...
Yeah, visit other towns until you find one... Can't recall where they show up often though sorry... I always use the kid trick personally, saves a lot of trouble...

In my first couple games, I usually went between Vault City and Broken Hills a lot, eventually finding a caravan selling a wrench. But once, I had to wait until I got to San Francisco--San Francisco--before one of the shops on the tanker sold me a wrench.

Man, I found tons of wrenches.
Maybe SAD or Gecko. I think the ghoul who's bud is a mummy in the Den sells a wrench. I dunno. I didn't have a problem with it.

Redding - check the miner lockers.
Gecko - check the traders and lockers.
Vault City - if you get lucky, you find one from the traders.
Travelling ghoul merchants - they usually have several of those.

Umm, if I recall correctly, there's one in New Reno. Check Eldridge in New Reno Arms. I think that's the closest to Vault City.

vault city: one of the locked rooms in the vault level 2

Yes, but those rooms require either an electric lockpick or very high strength to open. Unless your character already has the required strength (nine, I think), he won't be opening that door. The first opportunities for Power Armor and electric lockpicks come at a point when you'll probably already have found a wrench somewhere else. I think that particular wrench is there to piss you off for having searched the wasteland for a wrench when it was there all along, just like all the water chips.

No, I think it was there to show how screwed up Vault City is.
The girl that wants it says she's been waiting for a while for the super tool kit and needs tools now. Basically, it's just sitting in some store room and she has to go through a bunch of bureaucratic red tape to get anything done. And the game designers probably wanted a fairly easy way to get a wrench, so they made the Nixon doll quest.
Also, there might be one in New Reno Arms basement. Where Algernon is.

Yeah, your interpretation makes more sense, Mr. Mailbox Man.
The kid with the doll was a good idea, I just wish it wasn't a Nixon doll. It would have been interesting if the doll was a blow-up doll, the kind that Typhon wants. It would have shown how stuff like dolls is pretty rare in the wastes, and people take what they can get. It fits into another quest, too.

i got through the locked doors in the vault level 2 with only 75 lockpick, u dont need lockpicks, just luck enough not to jam them when trying. strength needed on only 2 of the doors and behind either of them there isnt a wrench.

I think you might be able to open them with a lower skill than that, the other doors can be forced with the crowbar as long your strength isn't too low. Either way usually by the time I've gotten into the Vault I've already sorted out Val.

Yup, SBB is right on that it isn't too hard to get through the doors. And anyways, there's this button which goes like "GAME DIFFICULTY : easy - normal - hard", so you can get a boost to your lockpick skill if you really really need to get through.
But as Requiem wrote it's usually a bit too late, because Val's quest is one of the first one's I solve in Vault City, but to get IN the Vault happens much later.

The crowbar just lowers the strengh requirement by one... You should have some buffouts by that time anyway...
I suggest getting enough lockpicking to run through the place anyway since there's some nice loot.

Bah, I couldn't find the wrench! :p
No wrench, no super tool-kit. So I just blasted Skeeter in the face with a shotgun and stole the car-part from his shredded corpse. :D

There's one in Skeeter's shop in Gecko. At least I got one.

People, take a leaf out of my book and remember the three Ss. STEAL STEAL STEAL. I did this in the Temple of trials on my first game. I wasn't strong enough to attack tribal guy at the end, so I stole his key. I stole the car part from skeeter, but IIRC he has a wrench in his workshop.

You don't need to be a citizen to get into Vault 8. Enter combat mode and just walk in.
