Fallout series and large monitors - WARNING

Alright, as some of you might know, I've been having trouble with running fallout 1 and 2. Images looke blocky, ugly, etc. It is NOT an XP problem. It is NOT a videocard problem. It is NOT a DierctX problem. It IS, however, a monitor problem. AS we know, Fallout 1 and 2 were designed to run in 640x480, and no higher. The problem with large monitors: these display 640x480 over a large and wider area. Large mintiors (17 inches and up) er not imptimized for 640x480, even though they can display them. They simply strechy and enlarge the image without realignnig pixels and maintaining smoothness. Therefore, images look ugly, and Fallout does not look as good as it ws MEANT to be.
This is kind of obvious, I know, but it solved my problem. I dusted off my old 14 inch monitor and Fallout runs juat as good as it did on my mac years ago. The dot pitch is not the best, but I can always get another 14 incher fo like, $10. So, for all of you who are running Fallout 1 and 2 on large monitors, it is possible that you will get a much nicer image on a smaller dispaly, say a 14 or 15 inch, which run 640x480 very well.
Edited(IL): By the way, I have a 19-inch NEC Multisync FE950+, so you can imagine how nasty the game looked . . . .

Hmm I'm running Fallout 1 & 2 on a 19" monitor and they look fine to me.
Have you thought about investing in some screen wipes

Though it does look a bit blocky being in 640x480, Fallout1/2 looks absolutely fine on (both) my 22" screen, my 17" and my old 15" (on which the blue signal died).
I had an extra 14" too but I gave it away - but it worked fine on that too!

I realise that it would look different on larger screens, but I take that into effect when ever I buy an older game. Technology moves on to bigger (sometimes smaller) and better things!

I have that same problem. Everything looks 'washed out', the same look like when you blow out your video card and have to enter windows (old windows, like 95) in safe mode. I've tried lowering the res to 800x600, still nasty. Cant stop playing though

Too bad Black Isle won't make a patch that will enable using higher resolutions like in Fallout: Tactics.

If they did that they'd have to make all new art for the game, seeing as it's all made at 640x480. There's no rendering involved, that's just the size everything is at.
As for your monitor, are you using a LCD screen by any chance? Certain LCD screens have problems stretching video to fill the screen - namely quality loss.

if they did make some sort of patch (which they will not) it would just be like in FOT how there are 2 margins added to the center bar, and you can see more of the map you are on. (like in FOT)

Cant someone else make a patch?

i fear it would be way too complicated, and the code is probably hardcoded to only work on its designated resolution... i doubt you (meaning anyone) could make a patch to do it.

It works fine for all of us but the low resolution makes it look like an old game, if they'll make a patch that will improve the resolution it will look better, like in Fallout: Tactics.
