When SPF no longer matters...

Can anyone remem my freshery as to how those unfortunate folks known as "Ghouls" got to be the way they are? Is it all due to radiation during the intercontinental smackdown, or is some of it due to the subsequent fallout?
Could someone alive during the Fallout adventure timeline become radiated enough to become a "Ghoul?"

Basically, it's appearantly a combination of Radiation and FEV. People exposed to radiation and later FEV will turn into ghouls, like Harold did.

Isn't Harold a mutant? It said so in Fallout.

But yeah its a mixture of FEV and radiation that makes ghouls.

So there's still FEV dancing around in the atmosphere? And a normal-looking person could wander across too much of it and in a few years wind up like Michael Jackson?

Nope... I think one'd have to be exposed to a lot of fev and a lot of radiation at the same time...

I believe Chris Avellones Fallout Bible describes what happened. In Vault 12 (Bakersfield / Necropolis) the Vaultdoors never closed, so the inhabitants got lots of rads to chew on. They became the ghouls...

What happens if go recieve:

Fev + lots of rads => Ghoul
Fev only => Supermutant
Fev + some rads => Harry, the Einstein-mutant or Harold(?)
Rads only => ?

Or so I've heard...

Yep... Sound like a game of chess one will regret. (Remember Zax, the computer wanting to play chess with you? Doing that is a sure way to burn)

FEV = Forced Evolution Virus (Virion?). The glow was a military researchcenter experimenting with animals. The plan was to end up with the ultimate soldier or something ... It eventually lead to the dawn of the mutants...

EDIT: I got the stuff about "creating the ultimate soldier" wrong. The next post by Warlord explains it better.

The Glow, or the West Tech Research Center was supposed to develop a virus that would prevent the effects of certain bio-chemical weapons China was developing to use against the USA. They developed the Forced Evolutiany Virus, which did protect from these weapons, but when overdosed lead to muscle mass growth and that kind of things.

You can find some holos from the Glow that will clear things up.

The FEV was a "good" thing, but it's overdose lead to these super soldiers we call the mutants.
