Well there's all these nifty new sprites people made for us to use with the fallout editor. Im just curious. How would you feel if say.. the Spasm gun's sprite were use as a laser weapon? Or even the shotgun or machine as a laser weapon?
There's also the issue with bullets. Maybe it says, "15MM" and its actually the "9MM" sprite that was used. Is anyone going to care or is this actually an important issue? Im not big on realism, so I've been paying little attention to this sort of thing. If it looks cool and could probably fit the role, I use it to my own ends :)
Edit: Hmm.. signature is too tall isn't it?
Does anyone really care? (About weapon names, etc...)

Hopes. Dreams. You have to live these things. If not, they will remain prisoner within the confines of your mind for the rest of your life.

the spasm gun looks like an energy weapon so i think it would fit. but if you want to use the shotgun or machinegun sprites, you those which look most sci-fi (like neostad or yhm. m60? ). but it still would be better to get/make some new sprites for your weapons (for example you can saw off the barell from the laser rifle and get a "new" weapon this way).
about the ammo, that's a less important think to me. at least not so much important as the weapons are. but why not use all those sprites which where at NMA and now are at 3D Downloads

The type of weapon you're making should match the design requirements for the technology involved.
Energy weapons usually look well, like energy weapons 'cause they have the right components for it. Take a gauss rifle or a plasma rifle for instance - they look like energy weapons.
"Normal" weapons which might be used as energy weapons could be stuff like:
* Pancor Jackhammer or CAWS - particle, laser, or plasma
* The M249 or M60 - gauss, laser, or particle
* The Beretta - particle or laser
* Browning Rifle - advanced ballistic
* 5.56mm Minigun - laser or particle
* laser - laser weapon
* plasma - plasma weapon
* particle - particle beam weapon (acts like a laser, but does plasma damage)
* gauss - railgun weapon
* advanced ballistic - uses advanced ammo contruction to get lotsa bang for the buck
