If you've got XP, right click on My Network Places then Properties then right click on your internet connection and on the drop down menu go to Status then details.

Well if you have a dial-up modem you can't really have a faster connection than 56kbps. Depending on the quality of the phone lines you will usually get less than that. I get on average around 33kbps. If you have dsl or a cable modem then your speeds will be lots faster and you can have your phone line free.

go look in the back of your computer.
if its a phone line its a 56k.
if its a cable its faster.

Alternatively, if you cannot make or receive phone calls while online, chances are its a dialup ((IE Less then 56k)) and if you can make phone calls, then its broadband.

It should say the speed whenever you connect to the internet. Look arond.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Basically everyone's right. I can't add much.

33k? 5.3? I got 41.3-46k on dialup. It's almost impossible to play any Half Life mod.

5.3kbps?? I think my old Commodere 64 was better than that. Maybe its time to find another ISP. I think even a free Juno account can do better. I think my phone lines here suck and that's why I can't connect faster. It almost makes me sorry to have given up my dsl.

My dial-up is usually running at 33k or less.

Too slow IMO

Oddly enough, with S-DSL mine makes that same kind of noise on connection, but then after like 5 seconds it disapears... speaking of which, mine was down since about monday... Some upgrading was done... though it is quite a bit faster now, so I'm happy. I can now get 140 K/sec down, 90 up. Old DSL speeds for me (before I got S-DSL) were about 100 down/25 up.

Oh, and don't use "bits", thats a marketting gimmick. use bytes. In kazaa/download windows/network connections it always, always says bytes. And if I remember right, bytes are 8 times as big as bits? so you go:
Bits÷8=bytes. and get a better نطۼڭﭾﮜ internet connection.

I'm sorry....But this thread is absurd...You people REALLY need to know more about the ACTUAL capabilities of your DIALUP modems..

Top speed for a 56k would be around 6.87KB/s...This is due to the compression on your modem. Whether or not compression is used depends on the type of file. 70% of the time speeds will be around half that due to file degredation or phone line degredation...

It might say "30kbps" sometimes, but that speed is atainable for a split second (usually just the downloading of the file header)...Could last up to 30 seconds, but this is VERY VERY VERY unlikely...

Try this....

Assuming you're using IE, but I think this works with Netscape as well....Start a download by right clicking and "Save Target As"... Now when the dialog box pops us, wait for a while.....

Now when you click Save, you'll notice a ridiculously high speed... This is caused by IE reading the total downloaded data thus far, and data is downloaded WHILE you are choosing the filename....

lmao. That's what I have. I couldn't really tell you how fast it goes, though, and I really don't care. It works good enough for me, and it's free. I know when I try to download stuff it usually goes like 5 kb/sec or something on average.

I've never met a community so technologically backward in internet capabilities... I suppose it must be some subconcious salute to post-apocalyptica.

No offence meant, I realise it's tough/impossible to get cable/whatever in certain areas and it's damn expencive anyway :|

Megatron - If you are using some sort of file downloader, it will give you a reading like this. Those download tiny parts of files at a time, allowing you to seemingly download faster..What's really happening is similar to what happens with IE..As it finds a download location for a certain piece of information, it automatically downloads some of the file AS you're connecting..This makes it APPEAR that you're downloading faster...

Try it with a filesharing program like eDonkey...Download a random file (4MB or so)..And time it. Then find the exact same file using "Download Accellerator"...Takes roughly the same amount of time. Then try with IE...Takes roughly the same amount of time. Granted one program may be about 5 minutes faster, but you have to take into account the server you're downloading from, the amount of OTHER people downloading the same file, and even the compression used on the file. Try an MP3 at 128khz...That's a good highly compressed file that will not allow the modem to compress it much further, hence won't download fast.
