Fistful of Dollars
Fistful of Dollars
Now that I managed to reinstall Fallout: Tactics on my computer, I was planning on to create a singleplayer map in a cowboy setting. All of you who had played my wretched RAID - kills in the house and garden, SP-map know that I love good settings (because I can't come up with them myself, I steal them from various places) and stylish surroundings.
I'm, obviously, trying to make this new level better than my RAID-thingy (which seemed to be incredibly popular in Poland), so I'll be needing all the help from you guys. Mapping and character & item planning are the easiest parts but I'm pretty much a newbie on the scripting side.
So is anyone interested of this new "rides to the sunset"-idea I'm having? I'm not going to convert the whole Fallout-world into something else... Just a spaghetti western oriented town somewhere in the Wasteland with quite a lot of dialogue and fun revolver / lever action rifle fights.
Just wanted to know if anyone would bother to download it when it's finished...

More than likely, check out my tiles at JJ86's site there's some western style signs there you might find useful and don't forget to download OTB's sprite conversions (from FO 1 & 2) at either his or MV's site for the sheriff's star sprite.

Ok, thanks guys... I haven't started mapping yet, I'm doing all the background work first. But now my first problem has arisen: I need a sprite of Henry 1860 Lever Action rifle.
Here's a sample pic
If any of you guys knew where to get one or had the guts to actually make it into a sprite, I'd really appriciate it.
------------
And a question for you guys:
Should I make the map and whole Character deal friendly for leveling up? Or should I just stay (like I planned on) with keeping the character at the same level throughout the map. As not being a total conversion I don't understand the need to have the ability to customize your character, as I'm trying to tell a unique story here
So what do you think?

You should also consider using Dynamite in your western setting. I've always enjoyed blowing up stuff in western settings :)
There are lots of complicated trigger thingies you could use to make explosive scenarios. Though im sure you'll want to limit it to focus more on the gunfighting. Just make sure you put a few villians on the rooftops.

Wasn't there dynamite in Fo:T? I can't remember... Nevertheless, if there isn't, I'll just steal the sprite from Fallout 1/2 and make it a throwable object.
Pretty much the only throwable object in the map, to be more accurate. But using it to open a bank vault door could be fun, though....
And I'll give those tutorials ago... I suck with image editing software, but I guess I could always try.
------
I'm planning on to put all the cliché places in the map: motel (/brothel), saloon, bank, chinaman's pharmacy, church, school etc. It'll involve a gang (in the Wonderous Seven -style... you get the picture ) terrorizing / taxing the town, one or two recruitable NPCs and lots of these new weapons.
The fighting will have fun sides... I'm trying to balance it between sudden deaths & fun gunfights. Unfortunately it seems that the only way to achieve this is to give characters low hit points and low weapon skills. Or should I go for a braver choice and make everyone's weapon skills higher? But that would reduce the funny-factor of gunfights effectively, no? Maybe high hit points & low skills? What do you think?
Also, I'll have a few additional things placed in the map that the player is not forced to do, like robbing a bank or something like that. And I also think I'll have two different endings, a good ending and a bad ending. No more, because there's enough work in two already.

It is always fun to have multiple paths through the game and to have some things (like robbing a bank) affect or even make other quests possible. This sort of thing is always difficult to script but is worth it.
I'll try to make sprites of the rifles for you. There are a few things I need to do for Requiem so I can do those at the same time.

Kashluk if it's any help I've got an unfinished western town map that you could use as a start, or at least to clip some of the buildings from. The church and sherrif's office/jail are done and just need furnishing, the rest of the buildings need some work, most are clipped from the main campaign and need changing around to make them more unique.
If you're going to have a bank robbery or a jail break then don't forget to download the destroyable door sprites from MV's site (I don't think JJ has them all up yet?).
As for leveling I'd prefer to be able to alter my character, but it really depends on what RPG elements you're going to have available.
For the western feeling, keep the hit points and weapons skills low, so that you can fire off five shots and not hit anything but get a one shot kill when you do manage to shoot someone. Keep the pistol (you're going to need some pistol sprites to fit with that rifle) as a cheap action point weapon (for those quick draws). Don't forget the double barrelled and sawn-off shotguns. Have some clothing (armour) so the characters aren't running around as tribals but don't give it any armour class or damage threshold/resistance.
There's dynamite in FOT but it's several sticks on a timer, keep it as it is for blowing up the bank door, but get a picture of a single stick with a lit fuse (for a sprite) as your throwing weapon, I'd also have throwing knives available they're in keeping with the western theme as well as moltovs. Though I'd rename and change the description of the molotovs so that they are just whiskey or brandy with a burning rag.
Senor Deluxe has done some Motel, Guns and General Store signs, also at JJ's site.

Ok, I'll take a look at those signs and those maps. And thanks for trying to make the rifle sprite for me, I really appriciate it. I was thinking of adding the following weapons in the game:
Revolvers
- Peacemaker .45 (colt) - 6 rnds
- Walker .44 (colt) - 6 rnds
- Dragoon .44 (colt, newer) - 6 rnds
- Navy Steel .36 (colt) - 6 rnds
- Pocket Gun .22 (smith's) - 7 rnds
- Deringer .22 ( n/a ) - 2 rnds
Rifles
- Revolve-action Rifle .56 (colt) - 5 rnds
- Lever-action Rifle .45 (henry) - 13 rnds
- Sharps Rifle 45/100 (sharps) - 1 rnd
Shotguns
- Double-barreled shotgun (fot's own) - 2 rnds
- Sawn-off shotgun (fo2) - 2 rnds
Melee
- [*removed*]Tribal spear[*removed*]
- Knife
- Axe...
Throwable
- ... Axe
- Dynamite
- Throwing knife
- not sure about the "molotov" though...
-------------------
Ammo
- 45/100 rifle
- .56 rifle
- .45 rifle & revolver
- .44 revolver
- .36 revolver
- .22 revolver
- shotgun shells
I have to do a bit of generalizing on the ammunition sector, because having 7 different guns and 7 different ammunition would kinda suck. That's why I'm ignoring the differences between .45 pistol round and .45 rifle round. Problems with that?

PM me an email addy that can take a 1.8meg file and I'll send you the map (it uses several of the new tiles I made hence the size).
Wasn't there a rifle/pistol ammunition used back in the old west which was used in both types of weapons? Even with a seperate ammo for the rifle you've only listed 5 which doesn't seem too bad to me.
Don't forget the 2 shot Deringer
Macbeth has done a Colt SAA sprite which would fit in and there was an old Colt sprite at NMA (if it's no longer there you can get it from my Shootout at the Tripple H map). Macbeth's also done a couple of nice sawn off's and an axe sprite which you could use instead of the spear.

Well, finding a sprite for the 2 shot deringer is a pain in the ass. Unless JJ volunteers to make it for me, I can supply him with the picture material. And there's no problem finding revolver sprites, they're all over the web.
And I think that the .45 Colt was used both in the peacemaker and henry lever-action. But I'm not sure, so that's why I'll just go with no exact pistol / rifle names. A bit like Fallout 1/2-style, hunting rifle, sawn-off shotgun etc. etc. no models, no names.
I'll have the spear, because I'm planning to have an Indian / tribal recruit for stealthy purposes The main char is a traditional gunslinger, expert in Small Guns & Unarmed (ie. drunken brawl).
To reveal a bit, the recruitable NPCs I'm planning to include on the map:
- Yellow Coyote, tribal, stealthy
And then either
- Pastor Richards, shotgun maniac, charismatic
or
- Doc Johnson, shotgun maniac, healer
So it'll be a small bunch, but rather than having several men doing the firefights, I'll have the tribal for instance sneaking behind their lines and backstabbing the enemy.

Hm... Throwing axe sounds cool, but how about the animation? How will it look to on the character? A club? A knife? Or will it look like an axe in the gameplay as well as in the inventory?
But putting it as both throwing and melee weapon would be really good... You can pick it up after throwing it, can't you? That'd make stealthy movement really useful.
I'm thinking of making Doc Johnson available as a recruit and Pastor Richards only a side-quest character. Big firefight in the church and all that, hehehe
-------------
I've been drawing some sketches of the town and I have a quite a few ideas for what to do in the town.
By the way, can you teleport critters/characters out of nowhere? I mean the map could be peaceful and all, without anyone excep the player character and with some trigger it would "create" creatures on some spot and make them hostile?
Like I said, it's been a long time since I last played with this editor.

The axe would look like a club or a knife depending on what you set the weapon type as. For throwing animation use the throwing knife fx. You can pick it up and reuse it unless someone beats you to it.
You can place critters/characters on a map, put them on a neutral team and set them to deactivated. When you want them to appear change their status to stationery anywhere and change their team to a hostile/friendly one.

Deactivated... Ok, I think I got it now.
I'll make it look like a club, that would be smarter. Thanks anyhow.
I'm pretty much done with the planning and I guess I'll start actually mapping after school.
EDIT: Oh, and here's the second rifle I think would be great for the map.
It was the rifle I was thinking of... Colt Revolving action Sharpshooter's Rifle .56 caliber. The only problem is, that I'll need a sprite of this one as well, so if you're volunteering JJ, I'd be really happy

Kashluk, I'm going to be making some sprites for Req today, so if you email me* some I can see about making you some too. However, I have to caution you, when it comes to rifles, try to get pics of ones that aren't in full profile. Try to get them in a 3/4 profile, that is, angled away from the camera. Otherwise when the pic is reduced to dimensions of a FoT sprite, you will end up with a spindly, pixelated piece of shit that's hard on the eyes. The longer the rifle, the worse the problem is. (I've caught hell trying to get a decent pic of a Mauser "Tank Gewehr" from WWI that would actually look good in-game.)Kashluk wrote:It was the rifle I was thinking of... Generic ammo is just fine. In fact, in the later years of the "Wild West" period, many manufacturers made pistols and rifles that took the same ammo, so .45 Colt could be used in your Colt Peacemaker/Single-Action Army (same thing) as well as a number of lever-action carbines.
Further more, I'd say that there's nothing wrong w/spears. Many if not all tribes in the West used lances/spears. Rather than a throwing axe you might want to have a "tomohawk", though.
Cheers,
OTB

I've just been PMing with JJ and he gave me a few advice on how to make sprites myself... And because I don't yet have that much (good) picture material, I think I'll stick to doing this on my own. But thanks for the offer & the info.
I've come to the conclusion that the tomahawk is a lot cooler than a stereotypical spear. Getting your head sliced must happen with style.
And another gun related question... Is that revolver action rifle's (picture posted above) ammunition somehow different from ordinary cartridges? I mean, .56 sounds quite large for a Wild West - era "sniper's rifle".
