Phraselator

Post by Menno »

Check out this new device shown at the DARPATech Conference; definately has plenty of uses in the military and police fields. Reminds me of those Star Trek-like devices.

The Phraselator Translation System is a voice-activated handheld system that translates predetermined phrases into the desired foreign langauge, allowing users to accurately convey critical information in real-time without a human translator.

How does it work? It's simple. The user speaks or selects a phrase. The Phraselator finds the foreign language equivalent. The translated phrase, prerecorded in the desired language, is heard through a built-in high-fidelity speaker.

Running Windows CE on an Intel® XScale PXA 255 Processor, the Phraselator (P2) features a day/night touch-screen, strong voice recognition and amplified audio all packaged in less than 1lb. It is powered by a rechargeable poly-lithium-ion battery, or four AA batteries.

Hey, that's pretty awesome. They could've called it something better than the Phraselator though, something that people outside the military would find impressive and intimidating.

Four double-As is pretty lousy too; they can get the NVGs to run on one.

Yeah, call it Translator Boy 2000.

Wonder what happens if you speak like a dumbass?

Remember the Simpsons episode when Jimbo writes "Beat up Martin" in his electronic agenda and it ends up being "Eat up Martha"?

Using predetermined phrases, eh? Not sure how well that would work if the phrases "Please don't kill me, I'm not American" or "I did not know she was 15" aren't pre-loaded.
