DJ or Mixer software?

Post by ExtremeDrinker »

What's the best?

I've got Reason...Well..I had it until my hard drive blew up a few weeks ago, and I haven't seen the guy I borrowed it from in about a year.

I use Adobe Audition for most things lately because I got it in one of those Adobe Mega-Box sets...Looking for something better.

Things I'm looking at now:

Acid 4 Pro
Sound Forge 7
Mixmeister Pro 5
EJay Mix Station 2

Anyone have any opinions?

Acid is the only one I've worked with, its a solid program in my opinion.

Expensive unless its free though.

are you talking about pcdj software that allows you to mix mp3s, or audio production software?? for the former i'd suggest native instruments (all of their software is quality) Traktor:
http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?traktor_us

o, speaking of mixing, this baby is supposed to arrive tomorrow!

omg edit: If you're talking about production, I'd suggest you get a good sequencer, i.e. either Cubase SX or Logic Audio Platinum 5.5... a matter of taste I guess, I'm using Logic at the moment. Sound forge is essential for stuff like sound editing. if you need a program for fast&precise beat slicing Recycle is pretty neat. Cool samplers: NI Battery (easy & fast to use, good for drums and stuff) or NI Kontakt.Mixdown and mastering plugins: well, the Waves platinum bundle is all you need really, its got all the eq's and compressors and limiters and maximizers and bells and whistles. Maybe even some standalone mastering program like T-RackS for that final touch or something. Oh and I think you can "rewire" Reason (so it works as a plugin) to Logic and Cubase so if youre familiar with Reason already get it too mebbe. Then just get some good VSTis and plugins of your choice, but here's a few recommendations: get a few Native Instruments' synths (I've used FM7 & Absynth and both are great), and for bass Novation Bass-Station. But it's all about what you want to do and what that requires really, if you just wanna fuck around and make some funny noises then ignore this post and get eJay or something like that

I plan to do mixing on existing songs, and to make my own stuff...

The guy I got Reason from makes his own soundtracks for his movies, and he's got 3 or 4 music CD's wandering around.

Thanks for the suggestions..I'm gonna try Acid first.

yar, Fruity is pretty cool, especially the new Studio version, easy to get into and stuff. One of my all time favourite tunes was done 100% in Fruity. I used it for several years, but it does have its limitations - last time I checked Fruityloops is 16bit which is fucking lame if you have a 24bit soundcard you know.

I might try Fruity out.

The first thing I'm going to do is really fuck up some Beatles songs. I want to piss people off.

I actually get a kick out of hearing mixed songs..Like there was a mix of Back in Black (ACDC) with Eminem words...Pretty funny after I decided that listening to rap didn't make me hate myself in the morning.

I think you just layer ready-made beats & loops in Dance/Techno/Hiphop eJay... nuff said? If you have little to no creativity, want an easy program and don't mind if you're not taken seriously then I guess it's a safe bet. Personally I'm strongly against software a'la eJay cos they usually give the impression that "anyone can make music with a computer in 5 mins" ergo "electronic music sucks" :S let's see if you can take a few breaks, slice, arrange, equalize, apply some fx, compress, expand & limit em in 5mins and actually make it sound good. Appreciate teh break beat science dawgz & sledges yo!

Is the ejay Mix Station software better than the other software they offer, or is it all crap?

If you want to know what professionals use, it'd have to be Cubase, Cakewalk, or Cool Edit Pro. All very good programs which are easy to understand, yet have very advanced features.
