You don't have to be THAT critical, Mandalorian. But I agree with the fact that reinstituting the Draft is a very, very, bad idea. One of the reasons why the American public still supports this "war" in Iraq is because all of the soldiers there are there because they volunteered. That is why people still support this war, because people are not being forced to go against their will. As in Vietnam.

To my understanding we <i>are</i> enlisting women.

Universal National Service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age 18--26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes."

They can, legally, be drafted, but they won't because the draft is to pour meat into the infantry and women still can't serve there. I don't know why you would WANT to, but yeah. Males will go and die/

Unless some more legislation gets passed women can't be drafted. Only men are allowed (and required) to sign up for selective service when they turn 18.

Oh, and if you don't, you get inprisoned and fined like 20,000 or something? Repeatedly until you sign up? Even without a draft currently running the us is a fucking ass when it comes to that shit.

The last U.S. Draft was a lottery based on a 19 year old's birthday.

Think 1 to 50 had to take the physical.

Before: Some of the rural county draft boards were so pushed by a quota that they would send mentally retarded candidates down to the capital for the mass line up, ""to turn your head and cough ... ""

And then there was ""Mc Namara's 100,000"" when the Defense Dept. lowered the education requirements to press gang the high school drop outs ...

Anyone know how one qualifies to be a concientious objector? Will that even be implemented in the new megadraft?

Yes you can still be a conscientious objector. I don't know how, specifically, but I wouldn't suggest it. Chances are you'd get dropped in as a medic or field engineer or something. Getting shot at with only medical supplies or beams to build a bridge to throw back doesn't seem like fun.

I like to think I'd fight the man and escape to Canada, or even just go to prison for refusing to go, but I'd probably just get lazy and bite the bullet. (probably literally)

Hey, I qualify as one. My whole family is Quaker. I don't think I'll pull the pussy card and not go though.

Starship Troopers has a lot of interesting ideas, though I doubt they would actually work well.
