RPG Roundtable part 2

Post by Mr. Teatime »

[ -> Interview]

RPG Vault have put up the second of their RPG Roundtables that deal with the issue of multiplatform RPGs. There are two reasons I'm posting it here, firstly because multiplatform is a word that's stung many Fallout fans recently, and secondly, J.E. Sawyer is one of the three developers taking part.

Also, the console RPG market is an interesting one. I'll go out on a limb and say that BioWare effectively dragged PC RPGers and PC-style RPGs into the console world. In overall style and presentation, Knights of the Old Republic is not like Final Fantasy X, Tales of Symphonia or the "typical" console RPG. The amount of player choice involved in many PC RPGs like Fallout and the Baldur's Gate games simply isn't found in a significant number of console titles. Before KotOR, I would have guessed that a PC-style RPG on console would crash and burn. Now, who knows what gamers might accept or even start to expect?

KOTOR again. Why is this title held up as the pinnacle and essence of PC RPGs? Jeff Vogel also has something to say:

I'm not much of a fan of console RPGs either. Maybe I didn't play enough of them, but the combination of incomprehensible plots, frequent, grinding combat and overlong attack animations turned me off.

[Mini Editorial]Vogel also makes the point that it's common to dumb down for consoles, but not necessary. I'd happily embrace consoles if they gave me the depth and style of games such as Planescape: Torment, but all I've seen is PC licenses being destroyed by them. Particularly relevent to the issue of Fallout is the fact that it's a license that started out on the PC, and if it's going over to consoles, that says to me that serious compromises are being made to attract the new console crowd, in setting, plot, and application, and that what was once a niche, hardcore, RPG, is being changed to target the mainstream audience.[/Mini Editorial]

It's not that the average PC gamer is intelligent... it's just that the average console gamer is a complete fucking idiot.

Interesting read. Maybe there's some hope for the Witcher, and for the CRPG industry in general. Maybe MS or Bioware will buy these guys too though, and make em work on console RPGs.

Someone should start make FO3 a PC only game....
Not that they'd listen.
maybe the forming of an anti console terror group is needed...
We could hijack console delivery trucks, sabotage plants, and so on...

And sell the consols and get rich. I'd rather be rich then have FO3.

DeConsolistas ?!?
console-counter-terror

might be the CIA funds you...they love counterterrorgroups...for a while :giggle:

There are groups that counter that consoleterror already...by modding them, using Linux on'em and building beowulf cluster farms to render graphics for PC games on it... :evil_laugh:

Al Quaida means "The List" - where Taleban Fighters filled in who's to be informed (family) when they were KIA...nothing more, nothing less...
