Feargus Interview

Post by King of Creation »

[ -> Interview]

Gamespot has interviewed the great Feargus Urquhart about Fallout 3 among other things.

Here's a little of what he had to say:

GS: What was your reaction to hearing that the Fallout license was picked up by Bethesda?

FU: Good Luck! That's probably somewhat horrible to say, but I think the team at Bethesda has their work cut out for them. This is mostly because there is almost nothing that they can do that will make the Fallout fans happy.

GS: What direction do you think they will take it in? Some people have expressed concerns that it will be "Morrowind with mutants."

FU: Not having talked with anyone from Bethesda, that would be my assumption. I actually think playing a game like that in the Fallout world would be fun. Would it be Fallout 3? No. But that doesn't mean it couldn't be a viable game.

GS: Did you wish that it had ended up with some of the original Fallout team? Word is Troika made a bid for it.

FU: I think it would be fun to play an actual Fallout 3 that is in the same vein as the first two games. It's possible that only members from the original team would make that kind of game.

GS: Did Obsidian ever express any interest in acquiring the license?

FU: We never made a bid. The only thing we did was to tell publishers who asked if we were interested that we would do the game if the deal made sense.

Well, there are some things that Bethesda can do, but we've already been very vocal about that.

The rest of the article is definitely worth the read, as he talks a little bit about the fate of Van Buren, and some other interesting stuff. You can check that out here

Isn't 40 people a lot for working on a game?

That's the entire Obsidian staff he's talking about. Some are working on NWN2, some on KOTOR2, some are administrative and PR guys...you know the drill.

Feargus sounds pretty steamed if you read between the lines a bit, not that I blame him. Kind of a dick move on the part of Bethesda to mess around with something people put a lot of personal effort into. Fallout always had that home cooked taste, something I sincerely doubt they can recreate.

He is pretty blunt at some points. I'm glad he acknowledges that PCs and consoles are different, ESPECIALLY in terms of hardcore RPGs such as Fallout (something bethsoft would be wise to note if they intend to stay true to Fallout).

As I have said many times, we'll know if Bethsoft is intending to rape the license or not when they announce, for one, whether the combat mode will be pure turn based or some shitty hybrid model.

I don't think the TES4 engine will be adaptable to a TB mode. Well, maybe the new one will.... but it's been already in production for a while, and I don't think they had TB in mind when they designed it.
