A new section at Raptorman's site about the end of the world discusses survival immediately after the apocalypse. There's some good information such as what weapons and equipment you should have along with a few basic tips to make sure those zombies don't get you. The guide is unfinished, but is worth keeping at least one eye on for updates.

I live in south wales.. this country doesn't have more than six miles anywhere without a mile tall hill, to my knowledge, so i'm not sure what effect a nuke would have on this area... besides which, i'm not sure if they'd bother nuking too close to wales... bit of a waste for a few small army training centres and 3mil people...
Also, we have a great many caves too hide in, woot woot =D
Seriously about a nuke.. What exactly would happen to the blast front of a nuclear detonation in a country that is *made* of valleys and hills..?

It would be easy for them to detonate the ICBM's at a suitably high altitude to vaporize everything. Sorry. Keep in mind, we're not talking about Hiroshima and Nagasaki pussy-bombs... the multiple H-bomb warheads packed into the missiles nowadays can be thousands of times STRONGER than the Hiroshima A-bomb. That's why nobody can "win" a nuclear war.

If the blast happened low enough, it would moslty be redirected upwards.... Quite a bit of the hills would be eroded away in seconds though, and the fallout would reach farther because it's all being redirected to the jet stream.(Keep in mind that most of a nukes power comes from the insanely strong winds it generates. The acutual heat from the blast would be localized in a 3 mile radius.) But if they detonated it high enough, the hills wouldn't have much effect. Also, if the hills aren't very steep, they wouldn't have much effect either. All this I learned from Army nuke survival training (all 5 hours of it whoopie!) and the fact that I live right next to logistics command for the air force so they put all that info out if you want it.
